This article provides an overview of public university fees in Kenya this year to assist you in budgeting appropriately if you plan to attend one of Kenya’s public universities.

So, let’s get started…

Public university fees in Kenya – government sponsored students fee structure

Well, fees vary depending on the program you choose to pursue and the university that offers it.

In short, the fee varies from program to program and from university to university.

However, under the new funding model, the government funds individual students based on the level of financial assistance they require, so you will only be required to pay a certain percentage of the fees.

And one thing is certain: no one will miss out on the funding as long as you don’t miss out on the application.

That being so, here is the fee distribution per category (scholarship, loan, and household):

Band one

The government provides 70% of scholarships and 25% of loans in this category. As a result, your parent or guardian must pay the remaining 5% of the annual fees.

In addition, the government allocates you Kshs. 60,000 for upkeep.

Band two

You receive 60% in scholarships and 30% in loans, with your parent or guardian paying the remaining 10% of the total fees per year.

Furthermore, you also get Kshs 55,000 for upkeep.

Band three

You get 50% of the government scholarship and 30% of the loans, while your parent or guardian is responsible for the remaining 20% of the annual fees.

In addition, the government provides you with Kshs. 50,000 for upkeep.

Continuation….

Band four

In this category, you are eligible for 40% scholarships and 30% loans.

Consequently, your parent or guardian will pay the remaining 30% of the total fees per academic year.

Besides, the government allocates you Kshs. 45,000 for upkeep.

Band five

In this category, you receive 30% government scholarships and 30% loans, with your parent or guardian covering the remaining 40% of the annual fees.

On top of that, the government has also set aside Kshs. 40,000 for upkeep.

So, that is how the government has subsidized the public university fees in Kenya.

Public university fees in Kenya – cost of degree courses in public universities in Kenya

With that in mind, the costs of some degree courses at public universities in Kenya are listed below to give you an idea of how much you’ll pay.

On average, tuition fees range from Kshs. 122,000 to Kshs. 612,000 per academic year (depending on the course and university).

For the record, in comparison to the other degree courses, the bachelor of dental surgery and the bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBChB) have the highest fees.

Cost of the bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBChB) program – it costs between Kshs. 306,000 to Kshs. 612,000 as follows:

Egerton University – Kshs. 337,940

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology – Kshs. 612,000

Kenyatta University – Kshs. 612,000

Kisii University – Kshs. 461,210

Maseno University – Kshs. 612,000

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology – Kshs. 306,000

Moi University – Kshs. 612,000

University of Nairobi – Kshs. 539,750 (You can view full nairobi university fee structure for government sponsored students here)

Now if, for example, you enroll in a medicine degree course at Moi University and are placed in the first category (band 1), the fee will be as follows:

Government scholarships – 70% of the total fee per year, which is Kshs. 428,400

Loans – 25% of the total fee per year, Kshs. 153,000

And lastly, your parent/guardian will pay 5% of the total annual fee, which is Kshs. 30,600.

So, this formula applies to all other courses and categories to determine how much you will have to pay after receiving the government scholarship/subsidy and the HELB loan.

Bachelor of dental surgery fees (per academic year)

So, which is the cheapest university in Kenya right now?

Most students consider whether or not to enroll in a university mostly based on the amount of fees charged, among other things.

So, if you’re looking for the most affordable university in Kenya, you’ve come to the right place.

This article contains a list of the cheapest universities in Kenya.

So, continue reading to find out more…

Which is the cheapest university in Kenya? – A list of all cheap universities in Kenya, including the best cheap private and public universities in Kenya

The list below includes the most affordable public and private universities in Kenya. They are as follows:

1. Mount Kenya University

As one of the largest and most prestigious private universities in Kenya, Mount Kenya University offers a variety of programs at very affordable prices.

In fact, when compared to other universities in Kenya (both public and private), it is the most affordable.

The lowest fee at MKU is Kshs. 105,000 per academic year (for business-related courses), while the highest is Kshs. 510,000 per academic year for the bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery.

An example of how affordable it is: A bachelor of laws (LLW) at MKU costs Kshs. 170,000, whereas the same course at the University of Nairobi costs Kshs. 221,850 and Kshs. 183,600 at Kenyatta University and Maseno University.

Also, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing costs Kshs. 250,000 at MKU, while the course costs Kshs. 275,400 at Kenyatta, Maseno, and Moi Universities and Kshs. 309,400 at the University of Nairobi.

2. Maseno University

The Maseno University comes in second on my list, after Mount Kenya University.

Maseno University, which is located in Kisumu near the shores of Lake Victoria, is another institution that stands out for its affordability.

Their tuition fees range from Kshs. 153,000 to Kshs. 612,000 per academic year depending on the course, with Bachelor of Arts courses being the most affordable (Kshs. 153,000 per academic year).

3. Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University, located in Nairobi, is one of the leading and oldest public universities in Kenya, as well as one of the least expensive and most accessible.

While fees vary by program, Kenyatta University is generally considered more affordable than other institutions.

Besides, it is committed to making education more accessible by offering a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs at affordable tuition fees.

The tuition fee per academic year ranges between Kshs. 153,000 and Kshs. 612,000, depending on the course you are taking.

4. Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is yet another very affordable option among universities in Kenya.

MMUST is located in Kakamega and is well-known for its science and technology programs.

While studying medicine at Kenyatta University, Moi University, JKUAT, and Maseno University will cost you Kshs. 612,000 per academic year, imagine it will only cost you Kshs. 306,000 at MMUST!

So, yes, MMUST is very affordable.

Which is the cheapest university in Kenya?

5. Technical University of Kenya

Technical University of Kenya, formerly known as Kenya Polytechnic University College, offers affordable programs in engineering, technology, applied sciences, and related fields.

In comparison to other universities, their tuition fee is also relatively low.

For example, an engineering degree at TUK costs Kshs. 300,000 per academic year, whereas the same course at JKUAT and the University of Eldoret costs Kshs. 336,000.

6. Kabianga University

Moving on, Kabianga University is another public university offering cost-effective degree programs.

Their tuition fee ranges from Kshs. 183,600 to Kshs. 275,400.

Click here to see their courses and the cost for each of them.
