Mount Kenya University medical courses

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

Minimum entry requirements:

For KCSE holders:

You must have at least a C+ (plus) in your KCSE.

In addition to your overall grade, you must have an average of B (plain) in each of the cluster subjects listed below:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics or Physics
  • English or Kiswahili

For diploma holders:

You must have a KCSE C+ (plus) mean grade and a credit C+ (plus) in cluster subjects, as well as a three-year diploma with at least a credit pass from an accredited medical training institution.

Furthermore, you can enroll in this course with any degree in biological sciences or equivalent qualifications from a recognized university, as long as you’ve passed the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Course duration: 6 years

Fees: Kshs. 510,000 per academic year

 

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Direct entry)

Minimum entry requirements:

A KCSE average grade of C+ (plus), with at least a C+ (plus) in each of the following subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics or Physics
  • English or Kiswahili

Course duration: 4 years

Fees: Kshs. 318,900 per year

 

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Upgrading)

Minimum entry requirements:

A KCSE mean grade C (plain), as well as a Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN), Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN), Kenya Registered Nurse/Midwife (KRN/M), Kenya Registered Nursing/Mental Health and Psychiatry (KRN/MHP), or Kenya Registered Midwifery (KRM) Certificate from the Nursing Council of Kenya.

In addition, you must have a valid practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya and at least two years of work experience after graduating as a registered nurse.

Course duration: 8 trimesters

Fees: Kshs. 65,000 per trimester

 

Masters of Science in Nursing

Options for this course: Midwifery, medical-surgical nursing, critical care, nursing leadership, and nursing education.

Minimum entry requirements:

Be a holder of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Mount Kenya University or any other recognized University.

In addition, you must have a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya and at least two years of work experience following your BScN training.

Course duration: 2 years

Fees: Kshs. 210,000 per academic year (excluding university admission fees, project and practical fees), plus Research and clinical attachment fee of Kshs. 100,000

 

PhD in Nursing (Thesis only)

Minimum entry requirements:

You must have a master’s degree in your area of specialization.

Course duration: 6 semesters

Fees: Kshs. 600,000 for the entire course

Bachelor of Pharmacy

For KCSE holders:

KCSE mean grade of B- (minus) with a minimum of C+ (plus) in the following cluster subjects:

  • Biology or Biological science
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics or Physics
  • English or Kiswahili

 

For diploma holders:

You must have obtained a Diploma in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Technology from a Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB)-accredited institution and be registered as a Pharmaceutical Technologist with the PPB.

Course duration:

  • For direct entry: 5 years
  • For diploma holders: 4 academic years plus one compulsory semester industrial attachment

Fees:

  • For direct entry: Kshs. 375,000 per academic year
  • For diploma holders: Kshs. 290,000 per academic year

For KCSE holders:

You must have a diploma in Dental Technology from an institution recognized by the Mount Kenya University Senate.

You can also enroll in the course if you already have a diploma in Health Records and Information Technology.

Mount Kenya University usually holds intakes three times a year: in January, May, and September.

It is worth noting that the application fee (non-refundable) for undergraduate medical courses is Kshs. 1,000, whereas that for postgraduate medical courses is Kshs. 2,000.
