So, does JKUAT offer software engineering courses?
To start with, software engineering is a discipline that focuses on the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software systems.
That said, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is also known for offering various technology-related programs, including software engineering.
Now, to be more specific, JKUAT only offers a master’s degree in software engineering.
And just so you know, this JKUAT program is intended to assist students in developing the ability to conduct independent research and scholarly work.
So with that in mind, in order to be eligible for admission to the Master of Science in Software Engineering program, you must meet the following requirements:
Minimum entry requirements:
- You must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer technology, information technology, mathematics, computer science, or electronic engineering, with at least Second Class Honors (Upper Division)from JKUAT or from another institution recognized by the University Senate.
Or,
- Have a bachelor’s degree in any of the relevant fields with Second Class Honors (Lower Division) from a recognized university and at least three (3) years of proven working experience.
Alternatively, if you have a pass in a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with at least five (5) years of working experience, or any other equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University Senate, you may be eligible for the program.
Other details:
Course duration: Two (2) academic years for full time students and three (3) years for part-time students.
Mode of study: Full time and Part-time
Intakes: January, May and September
Campus offered: Juja Main Campus, Kisii CBD Campus, and Nairobi CBD Campus

The following is a list of the course units that are typically covered in the MSc. of Software Engineering in JKUAT:
Year 1: Semester 1
- Research methodology
- Foundations of computer logic and symbolic reasoning
- Communication systems
- Systems engineering
- Object oriented software engineering
- Software construction
Semester 2
- Human computer interaction
- Software project management
- Business process re-engineering and change management
- Software quality assurance
- Software systems risk assessment
- Legal and ethical aspects of computing
Year 2:
Thesis (which is equivalent to ten course units)

It will cost you a total of Kshs. 508,200 to complete the master’s degree program in software engineering (that is for those 2/3 years).
