Degree in orthopaedic and trauma medicine in Kenya requirements

Even before I tell you about the Degree in orthopaedic and trauma medicine in Kenya requirements, the first question is “Which University offers Degree in orthopaedic and trauma medicine in Kenya?”

Well, I’m afraid none…not under that title.

In other words, what you should know is that you cannot take a Degree in orthopaedic and trauma medicine in Kenya pure..

Instead, this is what you are supposed to do (How it works):

Step 1: Enroll for a Bachelors in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (MBCHB)

Yeah…the argument is that the work done by an orthopaedic and trauma medicine trained medic which includes orthopedic surgery is traditionally part of what doctors do (the Bachelors in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery curriculum covers that) so the correct degree to do is the MBCHB

So the correct pathway if your dream is to become an Orthopedic specialist is first the MBChB.

Recall that Orthopedic specialists (and orthopedic doctors) deal with the treatment of patient’s musculoskeletal system(joints, bones, muscles, ligaments, nerves,  tendons, and more)

What we are saying is this: You still have to go through the MBChB degree to practice as an Orthopedic specialist (orthopedic doctor or orthopedic surgeon)

That being so, below are the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) requirements in Kenya

Bachelor of medicine and surgery requirements in Kenya

KCSE Mean Grade: C  +(C plus)

Other requirements:

Biology /Biological Sciences – B plain (at least)

Chemistry– B plain (at least)

Physics or Mathematics– B plain (at least)

English or Kiswahili– B plain (at least)

You may also be admitted if you have the following qualifications:

A Diploma in Medical Sciences

Plus:

C+ (plus) KCSE mean grade ALONG with a C+ in the above four cluster subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree in any Biological Science area from a recognized University

The issue is, the degree is super competitive so for the most part you need a straight A in KCSE to stand a chance of getting admitted especially if you want to be government-sponsored..

You heard me right…there are very few slots in our universities vis-à-vis the number of students applying for the course.

So, check if you are qualified…

Step 2: Enroll for a Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery

Now, once you’re done with the MBChB, you are then expected to move to the Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery(If your goal is to become an Orthopaedic surgeon).

I should add that this orthopaedic surgery degree course takes about four (4) years minimum so you need to plan accordingly.

And remember you cannot jump straight into the course from the MBChB…you must have worked(practiced) for one year (at least) after internship.

So that is it…there is no degree in orthopedic and trauma medicine purely because even if it was there, it would have been split from the MBChB and that probably does not make sense.

What about if you hold a Diploma in orthopaedic and trauma medicine? Which way do you go?

I have noted that some of those asking about the requirements for Degree in orthopaedic and trauma medicine in Kenya are holders of Diploma in orthopaedic and trauma medicine and want to know if there’s a way they can upgrade the Diploma to a Degree.

Well, here is what you should know..

Your best bet is taking a Higher Diploma in Orthopaedic & Trauma Medicine ….it is considered to be equal to a degree by some employers so it might be worth pursuing.

You could even choose to become an expert in the Paediatric Orthopaedic and Trauma Medicine line, which means you enroll for a Higher Diploma in Orthopaedic & Trauma Medicine(Paediatrics) at KMTC.

Keep in mind that the higher diploma just needs a Diploma in Orthopaedic and Trauma Medicine from any recognized institution – and 2 years working experience (post-qualification)

You can check with KMTC when they are going to have their next intake for the course.
