Perhaps you want to do nursing (at the degree level) and you are not sure about the exact degree in nursing requirements in kenya….

Well, if that’s you, read on – below are the specific degree in nursing requirements in kenya (for both self-sponsored students and government sponsored students applying for a degree in nursing course in Kenya via KUCCPS)

Qualification for nursing in Kenya – Degree in nursing requirements in Kenya (bachelor of science in nursing requirements in Kenya / degree in nursing qualifications)

General requirements

In general, Kenyan Universities will only admit you into the degree in nursing course if you have the following grades:

Aggregate Grade at KCSE: C+ (C plus)

Cluster subjects & their requirements

  • Chemistry– Grade C+
  • Biology– Grade C+ (or Biological Sciences)
  • Mathematics– Grade C+
  • Physics– Grade C+ (or Physical Sciences in place of physics)
  • One language– Grade C+ (That is English or Kiswahili)

Remember the above are, for the most part, applicable to self-sponsored students

Yeah, that is true.

So, what do I mean?

Well, you need to know that if you’re applying for the course through KUCCPS, competition for places is intense….and you often need to have better grades than what I have listed above.

Reason?

There are not many vacancies to study degree in nursing in Kenya (only a handful of universities offer degree in nursing in Kenya) yet many students seem to like the course (so there are typically a higher number of applicants than the lots available).

For that reason, KUCCPS will tend to favor those who have passed better when allocating the slots..

In other words, you might need to not only meet the cluster point requirements for degree in nursing in Kenya but also be well above the cluster points for nursing in different universities

Such is the competition for the vacancies…

In a nutshell, many a time, having a C+ mean grade as well as that grade in the stated cluster subjects is not enough..you need to have registered better grades…and as said, you must have met the cluster points for degree in nursing in Kenya.

Which brings me to the next question….

What are the cluster points for degree in nursing in Kenya?

Well, what you need to know is that the cluster points keep on changing (year to year) based on so many factors including how many applications an institution received, how well is the KCSE exam passed nationally, etc.

In fact, the universities offering nursing degree in Kenya announce cluster points requirements each year.

And that is fed into the KUCCPS system by those responsible for updating it.

Like now, if you want to see this year’s cluster requirements, you just log into your KUCCPS student portal, then under Programmes tab (Degree programmes), look for the degree in nursing option (under Medicine, Health and Health related courses cluster) and click on it.

Once you do that,  choose the option to add it to your course basket…..the system will instantly add you (if you have satisfied the specific cluster points for nursing in Kenya for the course in the university you pick) or tell you that you do not have the needed points.

So yes, that is the easiest way of checking if you are in or out (based on the updated cluster points set by various institutions).

Otherwise, if the data has not been updated (to this year’s), you can check the columns for past cluster requirements to get a rough idea of what you might need to have by the time the portal opens for applications.

Do not forget that you can always take the privately-sponsored route if you have the resources (your guardians/parents) because the grades I indicated earlier are usually enough.

Degree in nursing requirements in Kenya- Alternative qualifications

Your other option is to first pursue a Diploma in Nursing(in a recognized institution such as KMTC) then use the Dip (in nursing/ community health nursing) to apply for the degree.

Needless to say, this time you’ll be paying for yourself (though sometimes you can HELB loans)

Keep in mind that you must have a 2 years experience- post graduation-(at least) to be taken.

Degree in nursing Kenya requirements – Final words

Just to recap, you need the following minimum qualifications to take the course:

Aggregate Grade at KCSE: C+ (C plus)

Cluster subjects & their requirements

  • Chemistry– Grade C+
  • Biology– Grade C+ (or Biological Sciences)
  • Mathematics– Grade C+
  • Physics– Grade C+ (or Physical Sciences in place of physics)
  • One language– Grade C+ (That is English or Kiswahili)

Reminder: You may need to have better grades to qualify for the course under KUCCPS (to qualify for government sponsorship) because of the serious competition for places.
