How long does it take to get a certificate in early childhood education
The Certificate course in ECDE is, in general, a two-year course so you will be in college for about 2 years – I should add that there are colleges that will see you finish the course in 1 and ½ years (for example, MIT Teachers College in Machakos).
Of course, by the time you complete the course, you will have obtained the essential knowledge and skills to help you teach young kids up to around age six.
Remember the course tackles a wide variety of topics from child development, basic mathematics, languages, child rights, classroom management, psychology, all the way to early childhood education (ECE) theory and practice.
In fact, you cannot be awarded the final certificate in ECDE until you do teaching practice (and be assessed)
When are Certificate in ECDE Intakes in Kenya?
Admission Timelines are as follows (they vary from one school to the next so it could be wise to reach out to the college/university direct if you’re unsure about the joining dates):
Full-Time Students
January, September, and May of every year.
Part-Time, Holiday-Based, And Work-Based Students
April, December, And August Of Every Year
Who is the course best for?
- Untrained Early education Teacher
- Children Trainers
- Life coaches
- Early Childhood Caregivers
- Instructional Assistants in Early education schools
- Caregivers in Early education Schools
- Form 4 leavers with a passion for kids
And I recommend that you consider upgrading your certificate to a Diploma because there are more opportunities for Diploma holders even in ECDE colleges in Kenya teaching certificates (they often need tutors)
More importantly, the ministry is proposing to phase out the certificate and only have a Diploma in ECDE as the minimum qualification to be eligible for TSC Number..and that probably explains why some of the colleges that were previously offering ECDE certificate in Kenya have discontinued the programme.
