1. University of Nairobi
At Nairobi University, you can study data science either at the bachelor’s degree level or at the master’s degree level, and here’s what you need to know about the courses:
Course name: Bachelor of Science in Data Science
Minimum entry requirements:
For KCSE holders:
KCSE aggregate grade of C+ (plus)
In addition, you must have scored at least a B- (minus) in Mathematics.
Alternative qualifications
For diploma holders:
You can also apply if you have an ordinary diploma in computer studies, statistics, data management, or education with mathematics as a major subject and a minimum pass at credit level from an institution recognized by the Senate.
For bachelor’s degree holders:
You should have a bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by the senate, preferably with a strong background in mathematics and computer science.
Course duration:
The program takes 4 years (8 semesters) to complete.
Intakes
Intakes are held in September of every year.

Year 1: Kshs. 399,000
Year 2: Kshs. 394,000
Year 3: Kshs. 390,000
Year 4: Kshs. 390,000

How to apply
There are two ways to apply for the course:
- Via KUCCPS (remember that if you apply through KUCCPS, you will be eligible for government scholarships and loans).
- Directly to the school via the online application portal, or physically obtain the application forms from the school (keep in mind that you will be applying as a self-sponsored student).

Now, if you want to advance to the master’s degree level, here are the requirements:
Course name: Master of Science in Data Science
Minimum entry requirements:
You must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least Upper Second-Class Honours in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, economics and statistics, or physics from the University of Nairobi, or an equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi senate.
Other alternative qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Earth & Climate Sciences, Education, Arts & Social Science, Public Health or any other related programme (with proof of having covered an acceptable minimum number of mathematics or statistics course units) with at least Upper Second-Class Honours from an institution recognized by the senate.
- You may also be considered for admission if you have a Lower Second-Class Honours degree in mathematics or statistics, or an equivalent qualification from university recognized by the Senate, plus two years of work experience.
- Holder of a postgraduate diploma, provided that you meet the minimum requirements for admission to a bachelor’s degree qualification level.
Course duration:
Two years (8 semesters)
Intakes
Intakes are held in every September of each year.

2. The Cooperative University of Kenya
Cooperative University is also a great place to pursue the course at the bachelor’s degree level.
Course name: Bachelor of Science in Data Science
Minimum entry requirements:
For KCSE holders:
KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) with at least a C+ (plus) in both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili
Alternative qualifications
For diploma holders:
A KNEC Diploma in Data Science /Information Technology /Business Information Technology or its equivalent from an accredited and recognized Institution.
Course duration
You will take four (4) years (8 semesters) to complete.
Intakes
Intakes are usually held three times in a year that is in January, May, and September.
Fees
You’ll be paying Kshs. 306,000 per semester, totaling to Kshs. 1,224,000 for the four years.
