Certificate in clinical medicine in Kenya (and certificate in clinical medicine and surgery in Kenya)

Last updated on July 26th, 2023 at 02:02 pm

If you did not get the required grades for a Diploma or a Degree in Clinical Medicine in your KCSE, you might be thinking of first taking a certificate in clinical medicine in Kenya.

Well, here is the not-so-good news: No institution offers a certificate in clinical medicine in Kenya currently so you need to think of alternative certificate medicine courses you can take (if you really dream of working in the medical field).

Don’t panic: I will share with you good medical certificate courses in Kenya you can do shortly.

But before that, it is important to explain why you can’t pursue a certificate in clinical medicine in Kenya..

The reason is simple: the regulator of clinical medicine training in Kenya i.e. the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board doesn’t allow colleges to offer this course and only permits institutions to offer the course at the diploma and degree level.

And so no college would risk getting deregistered/being fined by offering the course.

So, what other options do you have?

Well, as I had mentioned at the start, you should consider alternative medicine-related certificate courses in colleges such as KMTC.

Here they are:

Certificate in clinical medicine in Kenya / certificate in clinical medicine and surgery in Kenya -alternative certificate courses

Certificate in Community Health Nursing

Certificate in community health nursing qualifications

Mean Grade: C-

Subject requirements: C- in English/Kiswahili and C- in Biology/Biological Sciences. In addition, a D+ grade (at least) is needed in any one of these subjects:

  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics/Physical Sciences.

What Job can I do with a certificate in community health nursing in Kenya?

Please bear this in mind before enrolling:

The course doesn’t have as many jobs – most nursing jobs require at least a Diploma in Community Health Nursing (plus registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya).

However, you can still be hired to work as a Nursing Assistant in some hospitals, nursing homes, and even homes for the elderly.

In addition, you can get work as an in-home caregiver (you are employed to give nursing care to patients at homes).

It is worth mentioning that upgrading the certificate in nursing to a Diploma is allowed by KMTC in selected campuses and a few other medical colleges in Kenya after you complete the certificate.

Needless to say, you qualify for more opportunities after upgrading.

Where can I take a certificate in community health nursing in Kenya?

You can apply to KMTC for the course. There are some private institutions offering the course as well.

Note: There are two other nursing related certificate courses you can consider at KMTC. These are:

  • Certificate in Enrolled Nurse
  • Certificate in Enrolled Midwifery

What I love about these two courses is that like community health nursing certificate course, you can easily upgrade them to Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse level after you’re through.

Certificate in Nutrition & Dietetics

Certificate in nutrition and dietetics requirements

KCSE Mean Grade: D+ (plus)

Subject requirements: D+ in English/Kiswahili and D+ in Biology/Biological Sciences

In addition, a D plain grade (at least) is needed in any one of these subjects:

  • Chemistry/Physical Sciences
  • One subject out of these: Home Science, Agriculture, Physics, Mathematics, Business Studies, General Sciences.

What Job can I do with a Certificate in nutrition and dietetics in Kenya?

The course prepares you to work as a junior nutritionist/nutrition assistant. The work of an entry-level nutritionist/dietician is simply to plan diets/meals to ensure that his/her clients eat healthy foods.

An assistant nutritionist may also be involved in recommending diet strategies to cure malnutrition.

Are there many jobs for holders of this certificate?

The jobs are not in plenty–and this applies even for those with higher nutrition and dietetics qualifications.

In fact, I feel this course is most suitable for those who won’t mind working as a self-employed nutritionist.

Where can I take a Certificate in nutrition and dietetics in Kenya?

You can apply to KMTC for the course. Some private institutions offer the course too.

And the good thing is that you can upgrade to a Diploma under KMTC’s upgrade from certificate to Diploma programme once you’re done.
