Types of nursing courses in Kenya

Certificate in Community Health Nursing

Minimum entry requirements: KCSE mean grade of C- (minus)

In addition, you must have specific qualifications in the cluster subjects listed below:

  • C- (minus) in either English or Kiswahili,
  • C- (minus) in either Biology or Biological Sciences,

And,

  • D+ (plus) in one of these subjects: Chemistry, Physics/physical sciences, or Mathematics.

Course duration: The certificate in community health nursing course takes 2½ years to complete.

Diploma in Community Health Nursing

Minimum entry requirements: KCSE mean grade of C (plain)

Furthermore, you must have passed in the following cluster subjects:

  • English/Kiswahili – C (plain)
  • Biology/Biological Sciences – C (plain)

And,

  • C- (minus) in any of these subjects: Chemistry, Physics/physical sciences, or Mathematics.

However, if you are upgrading, you must have a Certificate in Community Health Nursing (KECN) plus be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Additionally, you must have two years of post-graduate experience.

Course duration: 3½ years for direct entry) and 2 years if upgrading

Diploma in Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN)

Minimum entry requirements: You must have an aggregate KCSE grade of C (plain)

In addition to the overall grade, you must have at least a C (plain) in English/Kiswahili and Biology/Biological Sciences, and at least a C- (minus) in any of these subjects: Physics/Physical Sciences, Chemistry, or Mathematics.

Course duration: 3½ years

Diploma In Kenya Registered Nursing & Midwifery

Minimum entry requirements:

KCSE average grade of C (plain), with at least a C (plain) in English or Kiswahili and Biology/Biological Sciences, as well as a C- (minus) in one of these subjects: Chemistry, Physics/Physical Science, or Mathematics.

Course duration: 3½ years

Where to study: KMTC

 

Diploma in Registered Nursing, Mental Health & Psychiatry

Minimum entry requirements: KCSE mean grade of C (plain)

Furthermore, you must have at least a C (plain) in English or Kiswahili and Biology/Biological Sciences, as well as a C- (minus) in any of the following subjects: Chemistry, Physics/Physical Science, or Mathematics.

Course duration: 3½ years

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Minimum entry requirements:

Direct entry requirements: KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) and at least a C+ (plus) in the following cluster subjects:

  • Either English or Kiswahili
  • Either Mathematics or Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology

Upgrading requirements:

If you are upgrading from the diploma level, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

A KCSE mean grade of C (plain), plus either a Kenya registered community health nursing (KRCHN), a Kenya registered nursing (KRN), a Kenya registered nurse/ mid-wife (KRN/M), a Kenya registered nursing/ mental health and psychiatry (KRN/MHP), or a Kenya registered midwifery (KRM) certificate.

Additionally, you must have two years of work experience after graduating with a valid practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
