First, you may be aware that this course is best for registered nurses or qualified clinical officers who want to specialize in theatre procedures/operations, perhaps in search of better remuneration or just for a change.

Where can I study for an Anaesthesia course in Kenya?
Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia
You can take the course at KMTC campuses such as Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kisumu if you are a Clinical Officer which means you’re training to become a Registered Clinical Officer Anaesthetist.
On the other hand, if you’re a registered nurse who also holds a Diploma/BSc. in Nursing, you can study for your higher diploma in Anaesthesia at the following two medical training institutions:
- Kisumu KMTC
- Kijabe Hospital
Keep in mind that you become one of Kenya registered nurse Anaesthetists(KRNA) at the end of the course.
Certificate in Anaesthesia course in Kenya (for Registered Nurses)
The course is usually offered as a short course and KMTC used to teach it but it appears as if they stopped.
SO, sorry I do not have an accredited institution I can recommend for a certificate at the time of writing this.
Anaesthetist courses in Kenya : Degree in anaesthesia in Kenya
I had mentioned that you can also take the degree route in your journey towards becoming an anaesthesiologist in Kenya.
So here is what you need to know if taking a degree in anaesthesiology is in your mind:
You will need to train as a medical doctor first(That’s true meaning you must have passed exemplarily in your KCSE) for the usual 6 years and apply for registration as a medical doctor.
Next, you go back to University and pursue a masters in anaesthesia for an additional 4 years – in Kenya you can take a masters in anaesthesia at the University of Nairobi or Aga Khan University (Hospital)
You will, in the end, qualify as a Physician anaesthesiologist.

There are a few private training providers that advertise the anaesthetic assistant course in Kenya..well, you may not be registered as a qualified Anaesthetist.
Why?
Well, because the course is not among those accepted for registration as professional Anaesthesiologist by the Kenya Society of Anaesthesiologists(KSA)
Higher diploma in anaesthesia fee structure in Kenya
The fee varies again but for the Diploma, you can budget about between Kshs.100,000 and Kshs. 200,000 per year, depending on the training institution you will choose.
The degree route is way more expensive!
Anaesthetist salary in Kenya (How much does anaesthetist earn in Kenya)
Remuneration is sometimes not commensurate with your workload in public hospitals but you can expect to earn anything between Kshs.150000 to Kshs.250000 depending on your experience.
