Just so you know, the certificate in nursing is one of the courses that are not offered in many Kenyan institutions.

Does MKU offer certificate in nursing?
Well too bad, MKU does not offer certificate in nursing.
However, it does provide nursing at other levels, which I will discuss with you.
MKU offers the following three nursing academic programs:
1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
Minimum entry requirements for BScN direct entry
A KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent, with at least a C+ (plus) in the following cluster subjects:
- Mathematics/Physics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- English/Kiswahili
Minimum entry requirements for BScN upgrading group
- Higher diploma in nursing from an accredited institution or a diploma in nursing from a recognized institution with a KCSE mean grade of C (plain).
- You should have a valid practice license from the nursing council of Kenya plus two-years work experience as a registered nurse.
Campus offered: Thika Main Campus
Intakes: May and September
2. Masters of Science in Nursing (MScN)
Options for this course: Midwifery, medical-surgical nursing, critical care, nursing leadership, and nursing education.
Minimum entry requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mount Kenya University or any other recognized University.
- You must also possess a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya with at least 2-years work experience post BScN training.
3. PhD in Nursing (Thesis only)
Minimum entry requirements:
You should have Master’s degree in your area of specialization.

Fee structure for nursing course in MKU
1. Fee structure for Bachelor of Science in nursing (Regular)
Course duration: 4 years (12 trimesters)
Fee: Kshs.106,300 per trimester
Fee structure for Bachelor of Science in nursing (Upgrading/distance learning)
Course duration: 2.5 years (8 trimesters)
Fee: Kshs.65,000 per trimester (excluding admission fee)
It is also worth noting that there is a Kshs.25,000 fee for indexing and NCB training materials, which should be paid directly to the Nursing Council in Kenya via Cooperative Bank, A/C No. 01136098613400.
2. Fee structure for Masters of Science in Nursing (MScN)
Course duration: 2 years (4 semesters)
Fee: Kshs.105,000 per semester (excluding admission fee, project and practical fee)
Also, there is a research and clinical attachment fee of Kshs.100,000
3. Fee structure for PhD in Nursing (Thesis only)
Course duration: 6 semesters
Total fee payable for the complete course: Kshs.600,000
How to apply for a nursing course in MKU
Before we get into the application process, it’s important to note that you must pay the following application fee in order for your application to go through:
- If applying for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, you will have to pay Kshs.1,000 application fee,
- 2,000 application fee if applying for a master’s degree or PhD in nursing,
And,
- 50 USD for all non-Kenyan applicants
Also, admission to MKU is on a first-come, first-served basis, so submit your application as soon as possible before the application deadline.
With that in mind, let’s get started on the application:
NOTE: You can submit your application form and supporting documents online or in person at the institution.
- Download the application form from the MKU website.
- Fill out the form, attaching scanned copies of your ID or passport, as well as relevant academic and professional certificates.
- Pay the application fee and then submit your application.
Alternatively,
- Collect the form from the institution or download it from www.mku.ac.ke and print it.
- Next, fill out the application form, making sure to include copies of all relevant documents.
- Lastly, pay the application fee and submit the completed application forms to the registrar-academic administration.
