Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) is a public college accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) to offer certificate, diploma, and postgraduate diploma courses in a variety of media fields.

So, if you intend to enroll in one of KIMC’s courses, this article will provide an overview of the KIMC admission requirements to assist you in determining which course you are eligible to pursue.

KIMC admission requirements

Before we get into the admission requirements, it’s worth noting that KIMC only has one intake per year in the month of September.

Also, the courses are usually advertised in daily newspapers in June each year, so keep an eye out to avoid missing out on applying.

That being said, the following are the courses available at KIMC and their admission requirements:

1.     Information Training Department

Diploma programs

  • Diploma in Journalism
  • Diploma in Broadcast Journalism
  • Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations

Admission requirements for the above diploma programs:

You must have scored a KCSE mean grade of C (plain) with at least a C (plain) in English and Kiswahili and in any other two (2) subjects.

 

Certificate programs

  • Certificate in Broadcast Journalism

Admission requirements:

You must have a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) with at least a C- (minus) in English and Kiswahili and in any other 2 subjects.

 

Upgrading programs

  • Diploma in Broadcast Journalism

Admission requirements:

Certificate in broadcast journalism, radio & television presentation techniques, journalism or mass communication from KIMC or any other recognized college and with one year experience in media

Mode of study: Full time and evening classes

Career opportunities:

  • Print and broadcast journalist
  • News anchor
  • Presenter
  • Reporter
  • Public relations officer

 

2.     TV/Radio Programme Production

Diploma programs

  • Diploma in TV Programmes Production
  • Diploma in Radio Programmes Production

Admission requirements:

A KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent

Additionally, you must have at least a C (plain) in English and Kiswahili and in any other two subjects.

 

Certificate programs

  • Certificate in Radio and Television Presentation Techniques

Admission requirements:

A mean grade C- (minus) in KCSE (minimum) with at least a C- (minus) in both English and Kiswahili, and in any other two subjects.

 

Upgrading programs

  • Diploma in Radio and Television Programmes Production

Admission requirements:

Certificate in radio or television production or in radio and television presentation techniques from KIMC or any other recognized college and 1-year experience in media

Mode of study: Full time

Career opportunities:

  • Producer
  • News anchor
  • Presenter
  • Camera person
  • Video editor
  • Reporter

3.     Film/Video Production Training

Diploma Programs

  • Diploma in Film/Video Program Production (Production & Directing Option)
  • Diploma in Film/Video Program Production (Editing Option)
  • Diploma in Film/Video Program Production (Camera Option)
  • Diploma in Film/Video Program Production (Sound Option)
  • Diploma in Animation and Graphic Design

Admission requirements for the diploma programs:

A KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent

Furthermore, you must also have the following cluster subject requirements:

  • C (plain) in English
  • C- (minus) in Kiswahili
  • D+ (plus) in either Mathematics or Physics

 

Certificate programs

  • Certificate in Film/Video Programmes Production
  • Certificate in Animation and Graphic Design

Admission requirements:

You must have a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) and a C- (minus) in English and Kiswahili, and in any other two subjects.

Also, keep in mind that computer studies is a mandatory subject for the animation and graphic design certificate course.

Mode of study: Full time

  • Graphic designer

 

4.     Engineering Training

Diploma programs

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Instrument Option (KNEC)
  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Telecommunication Option (KNEC)

Admission requirements:

Minimum entry requirements: KCSE mean grade of C- (minus)

Cluster subject requirements:

  • C- (minus) in Mathematics,
  • C (plain) in English,
  • C (plain) in Physics/Physical Science,

And,

  • C- (minus) in Electricity or Drawing and Design as an additional subject.

 

Diploma in Media Technology

Minimum entry requirements: KCSE mean grade of C- (minus)

In addition, you must have a C- (minus) in English, Mathematics, and in Physics/Physical Sciences

 

Advanced diploma in Broadcast Engineering

Admission requirements: You are eligible for this program, if you have a diploma in any of the following disciplines:

  • Telecommunication,
  • Electronics,
  • Electrical,

Or,

  • Media Technology.

Plus, you must have three-years working experience in the media.

 

Certificate programs

  • Certificate in Media Technology

Admission requirements:

  • A minimum mean grade of C- (minus) in KCSE, with at least a C- (minus) in both English and Kiswahili, a D (plain) in Mathematics, and a C- (minus) in any other subjects.

Mode of study: Full time

Career opportunities:

  • Studio operator and technician

 

5.     Postgraduate Training and Research

  • Postgraduate diploma in Mass Communication

Admission requirements:

A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university

Mode of study: Full time and part-time

Career opportunities:

  • Print and broadcast journalist
  • News anchor
  • Presenter
  • Reporter
  • Public relations officer
  • Radio and television producer

KIMC admission requirements – more information

Course duration

It will take you the following period of time to complete any of the above courses at KIMC:

  • Diploma programs – three (3) years
  • Certificate programs – 1 year
  • Upgrading programs – 1 year or 2 years depending on the program
  • Postgraduate diploma programs – 1 year or 2 ½ years depending on the mode of study

 

How to apply at KIMC

You can apply to KIMC in two ways: either through the KUCCPS portal (when it opens for applications) or directly from the school, as follows:

  • Pick up an application form from the school’s administration office or download it from here.
  • Fill it out completely and accurately, providing all the necessary information.
  • Next, attach copies of your relevant academic certificates, your national identity card, and the original application fee receipt..
  • After that, submit your application form to the registrar of academic affairs.

Please keep in mind that you must have a Kshs. 1,000 application fee (non-refundable) before you begin your application.
