So, is electrical engineering marketable in Kenya?
This is probably the question in your mind if this is the course you have been admitted into by KUCCPS..
So, is electrical engineering marketable in Kenya really?
Here is what you need to know when it comes to your job prospects with the course:
Is electrical engineering marketable in Kenya? / Is electrical and electronic engineering marketable in Kenya?
The short answer is YES! Electrical engineers are in huge demand in Kenya- just like in the rest of the World.
The truth is, graduates of electrical engineering find jobs fairly easily compared to engineering disciplines like medical engineering where opportunities are significantly limited.
I should add that electrical engineering is my second favorite engineering course after civil engineering (civil engineering seems to have the highest number of job opportunities in Kenya)
So yeah, you are likely to get meaningful employment with your electrical engineering degree or diploma once you complete the course.
Now that I have answered your “is electrical engineering marketable in Kenya?” question, let us look at the course in deeper detail.
We shall start by looking at what the course is all about…
What is electrical engineering?
Electrical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity.
In a nutshell, electrical engineers typically research, design, develop/build, test, and oversee the manufacturing and final installation of electrical equipment/components/systems in commercial, industrial, private, military, or even scientific establishments.
Remember that while the power option is the most known, there are other options including Electrical and communication/telecommunications option (this prepares you for work in the telecommunications industry) and even Instrumentation and Control option(Control and instrumentation engineers generally monitor and control a variety of engineering systems, machines, and processes).
What the Career/Profession entails
Electrical engineers carry out the following tasks among other functions:
Generate, distribute and manage all appliances and installations that generate/use electrical energy.
Work on varieties of projects, such as computer robots, cell phones, cards, radars and lighting systems in buildings.
Key skills and interests required to pursue a career in this field
- Independent thinker and the ability to visualize things
- Above -average mathematical and scientific skills
- Originality and initiative
- Collaboration/Team spirit
- Inquiring and analytical mind
- Project management skills
- Keenness to learn
- Effective problem solving skills

Electrical engineering requirements in Kenya
Below is electrical engineering courses in Kenya requirements (minimum):
Degree in electrical engineering in Kenya
KCSE Mean grade: B- (minus)
Cluster subjects and requirements
Mean grade of B plain(at least) in the following 4 cluster subjects (and you must have the indicated grades in the individual subjects)
- Mathematics- C+ (at least)
- Physics- C+(at least)
- Chemistry -C+(at least)
- Geography/Biology, or any group III or group IV subject- C+(at least)
Keep in mind that the minimum entry requirements vary from one university to another.
For example, here is what you need (at least) to pursue an electrical engineering course in Kenya (Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical& Electronic Engineering) at the Technical University of Kenya:
KCSE Mean grade: C+

Mean grade of C plus(at least) in the following 4 cluster subjects (and you must have the indicated grades in the individual subjects)
- Mathematics- C+ (at least)
- Physics- C+(at least)
- Chemistry -C+(at least)
- Biology/ or any group III/ group IV/group V subject- C+(at least)
That said, the course is –just like other engineering courses in Kenya- very competitive and you may need a better grade to be admitted especially under government-sponsorship.

Is electronic and computer engineering marketable in Kenya?
While your question was “is electrical engineering marketable in Kenya?”, some of you have been asking us about the marketability of electronic and computer engineering in Kenya..
If you are in this group, here is my opinion about a combined electronics and computer engineering course in Kenya:
Overall, computer engineering is not a marketable course and that means there are very few jobs that need a certificate or diploma in electronic and computer engineering in Kenya.
Instead, do a pure electrical engineering course (if you dream of working as an electrical engineer) or a pure ICT course like a Degree in ICT (if you find working around computers fun).
