Bachelor of education arts UON – introduction
The Bachelor of Education(Arts) Degree course – under university of Nairobi school of education -is for those who want to become secondary schools teachers in Kenya and beyond.
That said, it can also be helpful for those involved in training/managing tertiary institutions (both public and private) and other higher learning institutions.
Also note that some of the subject combinations will make you competent in areas such as Economic Planning, Financial and Business Management- including Accounting Practices.
Bachelor of education arts combinations –available 2 subject options
As you may be aware, anybody pursuing bachelor of education in Kenya is required to choose a combination of two subjects.
Here are the available bachelor of education subject combinations (arts) at the UON with one being a major teaching subject and the other your minor teaching subject:

Important: Note that you must have at least a C+ grade (KCSE) for any combination subject that you chose. That is the requirement set by TSC and the university doesn’t admit a grade lower than C+.
Remember that you also need to have a KCSE mean grade of C+ overall or above (in your KCSE) to be considered for the programme.

Bachelor Of Education Arts UON – course structure
The course shall last over a duration not exceeding eight(8) semesters. Each semester is fifteen weeks long.
Candidates shall take 55 units (at least) for the 4 years of study. The units are distributed as follows:-
Year 1
- General studies units –3
- Education units- 5
- Major teaching subject units -4
- Minor teaching subject units -4
Total=16 units
Year 2
- General studies units –0
- Education units- 5
- Major teaching subject units -4
- Minor teaching subject units -4
Total=13 units
Year 3
- General studies units –0
- Education units- 7
- Major teaching subject units -6
- Minor teaching subject units -2
Total=15 units
Year 4
- General studies units –0
- Education units- 3
- Major teaching subject units -6
- Minor teaching subject units -2
Total=11 units
GRAND TOTAL= 55 Units
You will select both your major & minor teaching subject at the start of the 3rd year from the above subject combinations.
The other thing you should keep in mind is that you will be required to go for TP (teaching practice) at a school of your choice (and pass) before you’re awarded your B.ED –Arts degree.
