So, is mechatronic engineering marketable in Kenya?
Well, below is what you need to understand about your job prospects if you take a mechatronic engineering course in Kenya
Is mechatronic engineering marketable in Kenya?
Now, like other engineering disciplines in Kenya, mechatronic engineering is a marketable course in Kenya.
And here is why I feel that mechatronic engineering can be a good course to do in Kenya:
Any company/firm that makes a product(or device) that uses a mixture of mechanical parts, electrical components, and some control systems hire Mechatronics Engineeers.
That being so, you’ll find jobs in countless industries including truck, automotive, heavy equipment industries, aircraft design, and even companies that make appliances (Companies like LG, Samsung, GE, Haeir, Sharp, Etc).
In a nutshell, mechatronic engineering is a multi-disciplinary engineering course that enables you to work in a wide range of industries/economic sectors so you are likely to have a variety of job opportunities to choose from.
Typical responsibilities for holders of mechatronic engineering course in Kenya
- Enhancing electro-mechanical systems / mechatronic devices.
- Identifying areas that are weak in a production line and making necessary recommendations.
- Investigating problems and designing solutions that will satisfy them.
- Selecting required tools (and materials) for the production process.
- Perform day-to-day maintenance to ensure machinery continue to operate effectively.
- Perform equipment/parts audits
- Relocate, install, and modify electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic machineries and equipment.
- Communicate/interact with clients, technicians, and other officials to ensure smooth flow of work and processes
- Find faults in a professional manner and perform repairs.
- Ensuring proper record keeping history regarding every equipment supplied.
- Oversee safety issues regarding the operation of equipment.
- Research field advancements and initiate upgrades/modifications to production systems.
- Developing physics-based multibody dynamics models (of powertrain and mechanical/electric drive-line products)
- Provide design recommendations to ensure products meets customer specifications.

- HND(Higher National Diploma) in mechatronics Engineering
- Diploma in mechatronics Engineering
Here are the minimum entry qualifications for each of the courses:
Requirements for a Degree in mechatronic engineering in Kenya
Overall, you must have passed very well in your KCSE especially if you want to join the course under government sponsorship.
In fact, because not many universities in Kenya offer the course, studying opportunities are limited and sometime only students with straight As in KCSE qualify for the programmer under government sponsorship.
Here are the general requirements to pursue a Bachelor of Science (Bsc.) in Mechatronic Engineering in universities such as JKUAT for self-sponsored students:
KCSE mean grade: B-
Additional requirements
In addition, you must have an aggregate score of B plain in the 4 four cluster subjects below (and also have the indicated minimum grade in each subject)
Option A:
Mathematics – B |
Physics – C+ |
Chemistry- C+ |
Geography or Biology or Any Group IV subject – C+ |
Option B:
Mathematics – C+ |
Physical Sciences- B |
Biological Sciences- C+ |
Geography or Biology or Any Group IV subject – C+ |
Other acceptable qualifications
- Diploma in a relevant field (with a credit pass) from a reputable institution
- KNEC diploma (in a relevant field)
- A HND(Higher National Diploma) in a relevant field.
That said, universities such as Dedan Kimathi University have friendlier Entry requirements.
Just so you know, you need a C+ (KCSE mean grade) and a C+ (Minimum) in these three subjects: Maths, Chemistry, and Physics to take the course at Dedan Kimath University.
