Well, scoring a D+ and you had plans to pursue a course in the medical field can be disappointing.
Why do I say so?
This is because almost all medical courses demand grades not less than C- for a certificate level and that way you might think that all is lost.
Luckily, all is not lost since there are some of the medical courses you can pursue with even as low as D plain in your KCSE.
However, it should be noted that you will have to start from the certificate level and then keep upgrading to the level you would like (for example up to master or P.H.D)

Medical courses with D+
1. Certificate in Community Health and Development
Qualifications:
- KCSE mean grade of D+ plus
Cluster Subjects requirements:
- D plain in English or Kiswahili
- D plain in any of the following subjects; mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, physical science, or biological science/.

2. Certificate in Counseling Psychology (Counseling Psychology)
Depending on the institution you enroll in to pursue this course, this can determine if you will take this course with a D+ or not.
In short, the entry requirements will depend on the institution you would like to join.
So, with a d+ in your KCSE, you can enroll for the above course in KCSE in the following institutions.
- Kenya Institute of social work, Nairobi
- Africana College of Professionals, Thika
- Nairobi Women’s hospital medical training college, Nairobi
3. Certificate in Perioperative Theatre Technology at Level 5
Minimum entry requirements
- Mean grade of D+ plus in KCSE
Side note: It should be noted that this is the requirements set by the examination body NITA
Medical courses to pursue with KCSE d+ at KMTC
If you are planning to pursue a medical course in Kenya, you might be thinking of enrolling for one at KMTC since it is the most preferred institution when it comes to medical courses.
Well, this is not a bad choice since KMTC offers a wide range of courses including, certificate, diploma, higher diploma and several short courses.
Now, as we had said earlier, with a D+, you will have to start from the certificate level and most KMTC certificate courses are known to admit students who have scored a mean grade of C- and above.
Regardless, there are a few courses that require you to have scored a mean grade of D+ in your KCSE and I will list them below.
1. Certificate in Health Records/Information Technology (for In-Service)
Minimum entry requirements:
- Mean Grade: D+ plus
Cluster Subjects requirements:
- D+ plus in either English or Kiswahili
- D-minus in Mathematics
2. Certificate in Health Promotion for the Deaf (CHPD)
This is one of the courses that you can pursue with a mean grade of D+ plus in your KSCE in Kenya and specifically in KMTC.
Just so you know, this is a Programme that is designed for deaf students only.
Minimum entre qualifications:
- KCSE mean grade of D+ plus
Cluster Subjects requirement s:
- D+ plus in English or Kenya Sign Language
- D (Plain) in Biology
- Additionally, you must have obtained a D (plain) in Agriculture, Chemistry, General Science, or Mathematics.

3. Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics
To obtain a certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics, or simply to become a nutritionist or dietician, this is the right course for you.
In fact, throughout the course, you learn all aspects of proper diet, health, weight management, and more such topics.
Minimum entry requirements:
- KSCE mean grade of D+ plus
Cluster Subjects qualifications:
- D+ plus in English or Kiswahili
- D+ plus in Biology or Biological Sciences
- D plain in Chemistry or Physical Science
- And finally have a D (plain) in any one of the following subjects: Agriculture, General Science, Home Science, Mathematics, and Physics.
Medical courses with d plain in mathematics
When it comes to most medical courses in Kenya, you must meet a certain mean grade plus cluster subject to enroll for the course.
Here, we will look at the courses you can take with D plain in mathematics but you have to keep in mind that you must meet the minimum entry requirements plus the other cluster subjects as well.
1. Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics
Mean grade and cluster subject are just as listed above.
2. Certificate in Community Health Assistant
- Mean Grade C-minus in KCSE
Cluster Subjects qualifications:
- D+ in English or Kiswahili
- D in Biology/ Biological Sciences
- And D in any of the following: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics/Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Home Science
3. Certificate in Medical Engineering
- KCSE mean grade of C-
Cluster Subjects requirements:
- C- in English or Kiswahili
- D plain in Mathematics
- D- in Physics/Physical Sciences.
- Lastly, D plain in any one of the following: Chemistry, Biology/Biological Sciences, Electricity, Metal Work, Technical Drawing
4. Certificate in Public Health
- Mean Grade C-
Cluster Subjects requirements:
- C- in English or Kiswahili
- D+ in Biology or Biological Sciences
- D in Mathematics
- And finally, D in any one of the following: Home Science, Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture, Building Construction, Technical Drawing, Electricity, or Woodwork
5. Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician
This is a certificate course if you scored a C- in their KCSE and it does not consider cluster subjects requirement.
Therefore, with a mean grade of C-.it does not matter if you scored a D plain in your KCSE or even a higher grade you can still take the course.

Medical courses with D+ FAQs
1. Can I do a certificate in nursing with a d?
No! It is not possible to do a nursing course in any registered institution in Kenya if you scored a mean grade of d plain in your KCSE.
Simply, you must have at least a mean grade of C- in your KCSE plus you need to meet the cluster Subjects qualifications that include; C- in English or Kiswahili and Biology/Biological Sciences, and a D+ in any one of the following: – Physics/Physical Sciences, Chemistry or Mathematics.
2. Can I do medical courses with d plain?
YES! As much as not all medical courses you can pursue with a d plain in your KCSE, the good thing is that there are several courses you can pursue with a d as long as you have qualified in the cluster subjects.
