TSC employment of ECDE teachers (TSC news on ECDE teachers employment): As you might be aware, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is the statutory body- as established by the Constitution of Kenya- that is in charge of recruiting, managing, and supervising teachers in Kenya (save for technical trainers, who are under PSC).

Now, in recent years, a lot of ECDE teachers -who are either working in private pre-schools or for county governments or are unemployed- have been calling on TSC to employ ECDE teachers in Kenya.

So, is there hope for you if you’re a qualified ECDE Teacher in Kenya (perhaps you have a Degree/Diploma in ECDE or an equivalent qualification) and you do not want to be underpaid by the county government/private ECDE centres?

Well, below is what you need to know about TSC employment of ECDE teachers as of today..

TSC employment of ECDE teachers – Why TSC should hire ECDE teachers in Kenya

We shall begin by making a case for TSC employment of ECDE teachers..

You see, here at KenyaEducationGuide.com, we feel there are quite a number of very good reasons why TSC need to employ ECDE tutors.

First, you as an ECDE teacher play a super vital role in Kenya’s education system….

You’re not only responsible for providing important early childhood education(ECE) to kids aged between 3-6 years old but you’re the very first contact between the child and the education system.

Needless to say, the 3-6 years age is a very critical period in any child’s development so you essentially lay the foundation for the child’s future learning.

Secondly, the current system where county governments employ ECDE teachers – and I have to say on very miserable terms- is not sustainable at all.

Why?

Well, it is an open secret that County governments are often grappling with financial challenges, meaning ECDE teachers repetitively go for months without pay – and even when they’re paid on time, you sometimes do not get your full pay.

The results?

TIME OUT

Hey there! Are you looking for the best courses, top colleges and universities, career guidance, and exciting scholarship opportunities in Kenya? Look no further! Join our Facebook page to stay up-to-date with all the latest information and insights on these topics.

So Please follow Kenya Education Guide on Facebook here for more updates about best courses in Kenya, best colleges and Universities in Kenya, Career choice options, Scholarships in Kenya, etc

Thanks.

Now proceed reading below..

An unhealthy high turnover rate among ECDE teachers in Kenya- frequent change of employers ultimately lower the quality of ECE in Kenya.

Third, employing ECDE teachers by TSC would bring uniformity to the education system.

You might know that there is a lack of uniformity in the qualifications and terms of service of ECDE teachers across the country currently.

And it is clear that this can make it difficult for ECDE teachers to move from one county to another.

So:

Will TSC employ ECDE teachers?

Sadly, the TSC has not yet made a decision on whether or not to employ ECDE teachers under their terms so you may have to stick with your present employer in the medium term.

But on a more positive note, there are several factors that suggest that TSC might do so (employ ECDE tutors on permanent and pensionable terms) in the near future.

To begin with, the government of Kenya through the ministry has expressed its commitment to improving the quality of ECE in Kenya.

In fact, in 2018, the government launched the Early Learning and Development Policy, which, if you forgot, aims at ensuring that all little children (3-6 years old) undergo quality ECE.

In addition, the TSC has been working to improve its capacity to manage ECDE teachers.

Let me take you back a little: In 2019, the TSC established the Early Childhood Development Directorate- this is the department that oversees the recruitment, management, and supervision of ECDE teachers.

Lastly, the TSC has been working to harmonize the qualifications and terms of service of ECDE teachers across the country- TSC is guided by the salaries and remuneration commission here (already a Scheme of Service is in place and counties have been ordered to adhere to it).

We believe that this would make it way easier for TSC to employ ECDE teachers permanently.

Do not forget that many governors where counties have employed ECDE teachers on permanent terms have repeatedly expressed their willingness to off-load their ECDE teachers to TSC once an agreement is reached

How much will ECDE teachers earn under the new TSC scheme of service for ECDE teachers?

Below is a look at what you can expect to earn as an ECDE teacher under TSC recommended terms of service:

Lowest Paid ECDE Teacher

The position is officially referred to as E.C.D.E Teacher III and you need at least a Certificate in ECDE to be absorbed)

Minimum pay= Kshs.7836.00

Maximum pay= Kshs.8717.00

Highest Paid ECDE Teacher

The position is referred to as Senior E.C.D.E Teacher I and you need a Diploma in ECDE to get hired.

Minimum pay = Kshs.15224.00

Maximum pay = Kshs.19094.00

If you hold an ECDE degree, you can rise from the lowest grade (entry level) job group K all the way to job group R.

What are the requirements for TSC employment of ECDE teachers?

The TSC has not yet released an official list of the requirements for employment as an ECDE teacher- because they’re yet to make a decision on the issue.

That said, it is likely that the requirements will be similar to the requirements you have to meet to get a TSC number as an ECDE teacher.

Here they are, just in case you do not recall them:

Certificate ECDE teachers

Have a Minimum of CPE/KCPE together with an ECDE Certificate from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). OR

Have a KCSE mean grade of D+(minimum) and an ECDE Certificate from KNEC. OR

Have a Minimum mean grade of D (plain) at KCSE, a KNEC proficiency certificate, plus an ECDE Certificate from KNEC.

Diploma ECDE teachers

Have a KCSE Mean grade of C Plain and an ECDE Certificate from KNEC.

Have a KCSE Mean grade of C+ (minimum) plus a University Diploma in ECDE.

Degree ECDE teachers

Have a KCSE Mean grade C+ (and above) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in ECDE.

Recruitment of ECDE teachers by TSC – Conclusion

The TSC has not yet made a decision on when it will begin employing ECDE teachers (or if it will indeed take away ECDE teachers from county governments)

However, you have a reason to be optimistic as we have discussed above so keep your finger crossed!

This article highlights the TSC requirements for PGDE (pgde entry requirements that is for post graduate diploma in Education)

Let’s first look at who should take a PGDE course.

Now, you should enroll for a PGDE if you pursued a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc.) degree and dream of becoming a secondary school teacher in Kenya.

You can confirm this by looking at the latest TSC registration qualifications where TSC expressly states that holders of relevant Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees shall only be considered for employment as secondary teachers in Kenya after completing a PGDE.

Let’s leave that and now focus on the specific TSC requirements for PGDE.

TSC requirements for PGDE – what do the TSC guideline say?

According to the TSC, you should meet the following minimum qualifications before enrolling for a post graduate diploma in education in Kenya (If you’re taking it in the hope that it will help you secure a job as a high school teacher upon graduating).

Hold a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized university in Kenya.

Must have scored a mean grade of C+ in your O levels.

You must have obtained a C+ grade (minimum) in the two teaching subjects you intend to specialize in.

According to the TSC requirements for secondary teachers, you can also register for the PGDE if you want to build a career as a technical teacher in a relevant area.

Here are the PGDE requirements for those with technical qualifications:

Must have scored a mean grade of C+ in your O levels (or it’s equivalent). Also acceptable are 1 principle pass and 2 subsidiaries at the ‘A’ level.

You must have obtained a C+ grade (minimum) or a credit pass in the two technical subjects you intend to specialize in.

Have a Bed TECH (Bachelor of Education Technology) degree from a university approved by the CUE (commission of higher education) OR

Hold a Bachelor of Science (BSC) degree in the applicable technical Subject(s)/Course.

This would be an ideal route for those who, for some reason, are unwilling to pursue a DTTE (Diploma in Technical Teacher Education) from KTTC (Kenya Technical Teachers College)- KTTC is now Kenya School of TVET.

Note that for the employment of technical teachers as described above, TSC asks for either a PDGE or a DTTE/post graduate diploma in technical education from KTTC (Kenya School of TVET) so you can do your math and see which of the two suits you best.

Something else before you invest in a PGDE qualification: All graduate teachers must have studied at least 8 course units at the undergraduate level in every teaching subject to be eligible. And this applies to all the degrees.

Of course, you don’t want to waste time and money pursuing a PGDE if you won’t be eligible for consideration for secondary school teaching vacancies afterward so it’s critical that you observe the above conditions.

There is another group of teachers who can gain from pursuing a PGDE…

These are teachers who are planning to pursue a Master of Education (MeD.) degree, maybe for promotion reasons but were employed with a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree.

For this lot, TSC requires that you undertake a PGDE then use it to apply for admission into the MeD program in any university offering the course in Kenya.

Lastly, teachers planning to pursue enhancement courses in certain subjects may be required to have a PGDE (please contact the TSC official in your sub county education office for specific advice depending on the enhancement subject).

Where to pursue a PGDE in Kenya (post graduate diploma in education in Kenya)

Now that we’re through with the TSC requirements for PGDE, the next question that comes to mind is where to take the course in Kenya.

In general, a good number of universities offering teacher education degrees in Kenya offer the programme.

These include:

Universities offering pgde in Kenya

MMUST (Masinde Muliro University)

UoN- University of Nairobi

Machakos University College

KU- Kenyatta University

Moi University

Kisii University

CUEA – The Catholic University of Eastern Africa

Baraton University (officially referred to as the University of Eastern Africa Baraton)

MKU- Mount Kenya University (they also offer an online postgraduate diploma in education)

PUEA- The Presbyterian University of East Africa

UoE- University of Eldoret

KCA University (Thika Road)

Egerton University

Chuka University

Maseno University

Daystar University

Overall, you are supposed to adopt a subject methods course when studying.

And since you’re preparing to teach in two approved curriculum subjects at the secondary school level, you should take subject combinations like:

Mathematics /Fine Arts

Biological Sciences/biology and Geography

Religious Education and Physics/Physical Sciences

Economics/Commerce and Chemistry

English /History

French /Kiswahili

TIME OUT

TSC requirements for PGDE – Frequently asked questions [FAQs[

How long does it take to complete a PGDE?

Answer: The PGDE extends for a period of just one calendar year (minimum).

There are two semesters of relevant course work, examinations, and a project.

You spend the last months in teaching practice in a secondary school/an equivalent educational institution.

Note that the teaching practice lasts for the duration of a single academic term (which is 3 months in secondary schools).

Is PGDE equivalent to Masters?

Answer: Nope. This is not a degree course like the Masters but rather an advanced diploma education course.

Can I teach abroad with a PGDE?

Answer: Well, it depends on the country. Some countries won’t consider a PGDE for fulltime teaching positions overseas without some additional teaching certificates.

Others are just fine and recognize PGDEs from Kenya.

UPDATE: Those who keep asking if they can take PGDE and be registered by TSC as secondary school teachers in Kenya should understand that TSC does not accept all undergraduate courses (there are a number of courses not eligible for pgde). In truth, only those with a BA/Bsc undergraduate degree are guaranteed to get registration with TSC (after completing the PGDE).

For any other degree, we advise you to write an email to TSC (use the email address info@tsc.go.ke) to enquire if your undergraduate course is acceptable for registration after completing the PGDE (You can also call TSC via 020-
2892351 to understand more about tsc pgde requirements in Kenya)

Otherwise, you can always take a PGDE(No Institution will reject your money) with any undergraduate course…problem is, if your goal is to get a TSC number, Sorry it won’t work…but you can always target teaching at TVET colleges under PSC as PSC only needs an Undergraduate Degree(for the most part) and in fact a PGDE is considered an added advantage. So decide wisely.

Turning to Diploma holders, you’re free to apply for English/Literature teaching positions as long as you have a combination of English and any other subject.

But for Agriculture, Home Science, Computer studies, and Business studies, you must have taken the 2 specialization subjects at the KCSE level to be eligible. Having said that, to be considered, you need to have scored at least a C+ in Math at the KCSE if you’re targeting Business studies or Computer (yet you had not taken them in form 4). On a similar note, you need a mean grade of C+ in Biology if you’re targeting either Agriculture or Home Science (and again you had not taken them in form 4).

Candidates who present enhancement certificates/transcripts (including those obtained through passing professional ExamLabs) from any recognized institution shall qualify for employment.

Applicants who had previously been employed under contract terms but were later terminated due to having inadequate units in the teaching subjects as per the TSC approved subject combinations can qualify on condition that they have since acquired the requisite certificates in suitable enhancement courses.

Back to qualifications for secondary school teacher at the graduate level and you’re supposed to have taken at least 8 course units for every teaching subject to qualify.

You should have pursued a pre-university, bridging course, or A – level in the relevant subjects if you had not attained the required mean grade of C+ in those units at the KCSE whether you’re a Degree or Diploma holder. Here is the catch: a bridging certificate shall only be accepted if you had a C plain in the applicable subjects and not lower. Besides, the bridging certificate should have been pursued prior to joining your teaching course.

The minimum qualification to be considered for teaching vacancies in secondary schools in Kenya is a Diploma in Education from one of the approved teaching training colleges in Kenya. Plus, you must also have studied TSC approved subject combinations.

TSC requirements for secondary teachers: Other requirements

To stand a chance to be hired by the TSC next time they announce a recruitment exercise, you must meet these additional requirements;

You have to be a Kenyan citizen.

You must not be more than 45 years old.

You have to be a registered teacher (have a TSC number) according to the provision of the TSC act, Section 23.

Note: If by any chance you have been registered by the TSC but don’t yet have the Certificate of Registration, attach the online print out of your TSC number together with the original bank slip reflecting your payment to the TSC for the registration.

Likewise, if there’s an academic or professional certificate you’re missing at the time of applying, you must prove that you have applied to KNEC for confirmation of such certificates. And it’s upon you to follow up with KNEC (within 14 days).

Secondary school teacher employment for those above 45 years old

According to the latest, TSC guidelines, teachers who are over 45 years can still apply for employment but it will be on contractual terms.

This category of teachers shall be hired on a 3-year long contract, renewable subject to achieving a satisfactory performance.

Lastly, the teachers engaged under this arrangement can only serve up to the age of sixty-five (65) years.

This article highlights the available bachelor of education science subject combination in local universities just in case you’re interested in secondary school teaching positions (or may be you’re just about to join University for a BEd (Science) course, and you want to see which teaching subjects you can choose.

But before we come to this, people have been emailing us enquiring about the best TSC subject combination and the most marketable subject combinations in Kenya and it’s important that we first elaborate on this.

Now, whether a TSC approved subject combination is marketable or not depends on just one thing: the demand for such a combination at the moment.

It’s an open secret that some subject combinations have suffered a mass supply in the last few years leading to a glut.

And if you take such a combination, you’re likely to wait for a very long time before getting recruited by the TSC.

The question then is, which are these subject combinations?

Well according to a statement by the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads association, the secondary school subject combination currently flooded are:

History

CRE

Kiswahili

And humanities in general.

On the other hand, science subjects, mathematics, and technical subjects like drawing have a yawning shortfall and secondary school teachers are struggling to fill these vacancies.

TSC is also facing problems filling up vacancies such as home science, art and craft, design, and foreign languages.

This means that you stand a huge chance of being recruited by the TSC before long if you take science, math, or technical subjects combination courses plus obviously subjects like French, German etc.

Having explained that, it’s clear that the best teaching subject combination in Kenya currently is any combination involving science, math, and technical units.

So, can we now look at the available bachelor of education science subject combination s?.

Here they are:

Bachelor of education science subject combination –available options

Bachelor of education science Course structure

Of course, the Bed. (Science) programme is tailored to make you a professionally qualified teacher who can competently handle STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects in Kenyan Secondary Schools as well as middle level colleges.

Now, in universities like Moi, students must take chemistry and mathematics, plus any other content subjects (for example, physics, botany/zoology etc.) in the first year.

You drop one of the content units and take up your two specialized subjects, one being a major and the remaining a minor from the second year.

You are supposed to get the skills required to teach the major subject up to the KCSE (form 4) level so you’ll spend most of the time covering the content for this subject.

The rest of the time is dedicated to the minor subject in your preferred bachelor of education science subject combination – you teach this up to the form 2 level- meaning that the content to be covered is relatively less.

You normally complete it by the time the third year comes to a close.

However, the professional methodology is given equal emphasis for both the major and minor subjects.

Requirements to do bachelor of education (science)

Of course, before you even think about the best combination in teaching, you need to have met the minimum entry requirements for the degree in science education program.

Here is a summary of the requirements to pursue a Bachelor of Education (science) degree at leading Universities like Egerton.

KCSE mean grade of C+ with the following minimum grades for each subject:

C+ in Mathematics

C+ in one of the following:
(i) Physics or
(ii) Chemistry or
(iii) Biology or
(iv) Geography
OR
Have a B- in one of:
– Physical Sciences
– Biological sciences

Alternatively, you may be granted admission if you hold a Diploma or an S1 certificate in science(Education) from recognized Institutions.

Note that it’s a must for you to have scored a C+ in each of your selected teaching subjects to qualify.

Universities offering Bachelor of education (science) in Kenya

Once you have settled on a suitable Bachelor of Education science subject combination, the next question is to identify a university to attend studies.

Now, overall, some of the most popular universities when it comes to bachelor of education courses are:

Kenyatta University (you even have the option of taking up the Kenyatta university long distance learning option)

Moi University

Kenya University

Maseno University

University of Nairobi

Perhaps you can check out the above universities.

Chuka University and Meru University can also be excellent alternatives.

Bachelor of education science subject combination : frequently asked questions

Does JKUAT offer education courses?

No. JKUAT mainly concentrates on engineering courses and doesn’t teach specialized education courses.

Is teaching a marketable course in Kenya?

Teaching is one of the ever-green courses and will remain marketable for generations despite the myriad advancements in technology.

That’s because the human population will always be bringing forth children – its nature- and these must be educated.

In any case, you can always apply for jobs in private schools as you wait for TSC opportunities.

Plus, if you have the entrepreneurial drive, you could even open and run your own private school.

Which are the most marketable teaching subjects in Kenya?

Like mentioned earlier, sciences, mathematics, foreign languages, and technical subjects have a huge shortfall in secondary schools and are regarded as hot cakes.

Home science is also considered a good unit to have in your subject combination.

What are the cluster points for bachelor of education science (math/chem)?

The cluster points for bachelor of education science course depends on the university with some of the well-established universities having a higher cutoff.

For example, at Catholic university, the average cluster point requirement has mostly been between 24 – 30 points while at KU, the same has been between 34 – 39 points.

That’s quite some gap!

In short, you have a better opportunity if you choose the newer universities when applying for admission to the course through the KUCCPS portal.
