In other words, if you take a Higher National Diploma course at KMTC,  your qualification is henceforth going to be classified as level 7 of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority qualifications framework.

Which means that it is comparable to a degree (bachelor’s) or other qualifications rated at Level 7 (Think KASNEB CPA III, CPS III, or even a Masters Craft Person I).

Indeed, KMTC has already received the full certificate of accreditation and registration from (KNQA) (QAI).

So, what does that mean?

It means that you don’t need to pass through a bachelor’s if you want to pursue a Masters Degree!

In short, you can apply on Kenya National Qualifications Authority qualifications portal to have your Higher National Qualification evaluated – and it will be standardized/equated to a Bachelors’ Degree, which implies that you can apply with it for a Masters Degree(once KNQA gives you the letter to that effect)

The only downside is that you have to part with Kshs. 5,000.00 to have your qualification aligned (That is the standard fee for Alignment of all qualifications applied for by Kenyan citizens)

Where to apply for alignment of your KMTC Higher Diploma course

You do that via KNQA portal …simply head over to QAV Portal through qa.knqa.go.ke;

What you need to have before you head to the portal for application purposes

• Copies of all your supporting certificates and transcripts(scanned clear certified copies) for the higher diploma- ask KMTC to certify for you or you can pay an Advocate/Commissioner for oaths to do that for you.
• Copy of your National Identity Card/Passports – the scans should show your photograph clearly….this needs to be certified by an Advocate(lawyer)/Commissioner for oaths
• In case you have since changed name (from what is on the certificate), swear an affidavit at an Advocate(lawyer)/Commissioner for oaths office, scan it and attach it too.

So yeah, there are no pure KMTC degree courses but you now have a way of making your Higher Diploma a Degree, if you’d like to pursue a Masters course (as you try to climb to the upper echelons of your career).

For a sizable portion of students enrolling in universities and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions, the new finance model for higher education- based on Means Testing Instrument [MTI]- continues to be a perplexing proposition.

According to the plan unveiled by President William Ruto in May 2023, the government wants to allocate financing for higher education directly to specific students based on carefully chosen standards.

The Higher Education Financing (HEF) Portal, via which individual applications for scholarships, loans, and bursaries would be made shortly after obtaining acceptance letters, was opened by former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu in 2023.

However, concerns have been raised about how you can apply for the government scholarship and who will receive it, how much you actually get, and more.

So Below is How to Apply for a Government Scholarship this year Under the New Model for University Funding and answers to some of the above nagging questions

How to Apply for a Government Scholarship Under the New Model for University Funding

First, to be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a Kenyan citizen and a KCSE exam candidate in 2022- that is according to the University Fund Kenya.

Additionally, you must have been assigned by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to study for an undergraduate degree, a diploma, a craft certificate, or an artisan course at one of Kenya’s approved public universities or TVET institutions.

Now, once you have met these requirements, just follow these steps:

By the way before you proceed, make sure you have the following:

• A copy of the sponsorship letter if you were sponsored by someone in secondary school
• A valid email address
• A valid phone number -registered in your name(not parent’s/guardian’s)
• Your KCPE and KCSE index numbers
• Your TVET college or university admission letter
• Your parent’s/guardian’s registered telephone numbers
• Your national ID number(if you have- choose No if you don’t have)
• Death certificate of your parents, if they are deceased- copy of death certificate if deceased one, if only one has passed on.
• A passport photo
• Your birth certificate.
• Your KUCCPS course Code (see it from KUCCPS Website)

Besides, if you’ll be applying for HELB loans, you need to have the national ID numbers as well as the registered telephone numbers for 2 guarantors(Can even be your parents).

Step 1: HEF portal registration online

Visit https://www.hef.co.ke/  to submit you application. You can also type www hef co ke login in your browser.

Step 2:

Once you are passed the new funding model portal login,  you need to register first…

Start by clicking apply now then click Register and then fill in all the information you’re asked for in the displayed online HEF portal registration form

Step 3:

Once you do that- you might be required to login afresh- complete your profile and upload any necessary papers as asked by the system.

Next, check the option to apply for a loan or scholarship according to your financial needs, and then submit their application (remember that students attending private universities can only apply for a loan).

Step 4:

You now wait 30 days for the system to finish verification and assessment of your need.

It will then send you an SMS notification confirming how much you’ll get.

Important information regarding the HEF website and the new university funding portal

• It’s important to note that although students attending private colleges are not entitled to the government’s scholarship program, you can still apply for loans through the HELB (if you’ll be attending a private institution).
• The new financing model will not have an impact on current students, who will continue to receive funds according to the old funding scheme.
• The amount of financial aid each student receives is determined by the household’s monthly income, and it has been divided into four categories: vulnerable, severely needy, needy, and less needy (read about it in the Government Sponsored Students Fee Structure)

Call HEF on 0746737935 if you encounter problems- and do not worry if you are told “HEF portal not working” when you try to open it- just keep trying..it is receiving a lot of traffic sometimes leading to an overload that clears every now and then so just keep retrying until it opens.

Best performing extra county schools in Kenya from recent KCSE results

From KCSE 2021 results, below are some of the best performing extra county schools in Kenya:

Moi Tea Girls-Kericho

Moi Tea Girls has been doing well for some time now and can be a good bet if you’re looking for a great extra country public secondary school in the rift valley.

TSC registration qualifications -TSC number application requirements (Latest TSC number registration requirements)

Below are the TSC number online registration requirements for teachers at various levels- ECDE, Primary, Secondary, and more.

TSC registration qualifications for ECDE teachers registration

Certificate ECDE teachers

• Have a Minimum of CPE/KCPE together with an ECDE Certificate from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). OR
• Have a KCSE mean grade of D+(minimum) and an ECDE Certificate from KNEC. OR
• Have a Minimum mean grade of D (plain) at KCSE, a KNEC proficiency certificate, plus an ECDE Certificate from KNEC.

Diploma ECDE teachers

• Have a KCSE Mean grade of C Plain and an ECDE Certificate from KNEC.
• Have a KCSE Mean grade of C+ (minimum) plus a University Diploma in ECDE.

Degree ECDE teachers

• Have a KCSE Mean grade C+ (and above) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in ECDE.

TSC requirements for primary teachers registration

Here are the TSC registration qualifications for primary school teachers.

• Have a PTE (P1) Certificate from KNEC.
• Have Bachelors of Education (B.Ed.) degree (Primary education) (with 2 teaching subjects) from an accredited university.

Basic TSC qualifications for the registration of secondary school teachers

• Have a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in 2 teaching subjects, a KCSE mean grade C+ (or above) and the same grade in your two specialization subjects. OR
• Have a BA (Bachelor of Arts) degree or a BSc. (Bachelor of Science) degree, a KCSE mean grade C+ (or above), plus the same grade in your two specialization subjects and a PGDE.
• Have a Diploma in Education (minimum) plus a Minimum KCSE grade C Plus or above and C+ or above in the two subjects specialization.

Procedure for teacher registration (tsc registration guidelines)

With the TSC registration qualifications out of the way, let’s turn our attention to how to register with the TSC.

We start with the documents that you will need.

Documents required

Kenyan Citizens

1. A valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
2. Relevant professional and academic certificates from institutions recognized in Kenya.
3. A copy of your National ID Card or Passport.
4. 1 passport size photo.
5. A copy of your KRA Pin Certificate.
6. Duly filled GP69 form TSC (Medical Form).
7. A deposit slip showing that you have paid the TSC registration fee (Non-refundable).

Note: You should deposit the fee of shs. 1055.00 to the following TSC account:

• Account name: TSC registration account number
• Bank name: National Bank of Kenya
• Account number: 01001000905001

You can also pay the fees via TSC Pay Bill Number 625625.

If you take that route, you will enter the account number 01001000905001 when paying via paybill. Note and save the generated Simple Banking Code as you’ll need it when completing the online registration.

Non-Kenyan Citizens

• Your academic and professional certificates. It’s important to note that your certificates must have been issued by an accredited/approved foreign institution and equated to Kenya standards by the KNQF (Kenya National Qualifications Authority) or other relevant public institution in Kenya.
• A document evidencing your registration as a teacher obtained in your country of origin (or any suitable document showing that you’re an authorized teacher in your country).
• A genuine Entry/Work Permit issued by Kenya’s Department of Immigration.
• A valid Certificate of Good Conduct or equitable document issued by the applicable law enforcement agency in your country of origin.
• A vetting letter obtained from Kenya’s Ministry of Education.

The registration fee is still shs. 1055.00 and must be deposited to the TSC registration account number 01001000905001 given above (at National bank of Kenya).

Important: Please note that all the above documents must be certified by the TSC Director or your TSC Sub–County Director before uploading if you’ll be using photocopies.

Before proceeding, scan all the documents using a high-quality scanner (the certified copies or your originals).

If you have prepared everything and made the payments, you can proceed to register and apply for the TSC number.

This is, of course, done online.

How to apply for TSC number : Step-by-step guide conforming to the TSC new registration requirements

1. Visit teachersonline.go.ke.
2. Click the New Teacher registration

3. The screen below pops up.

4. Scroll down and Type your national ID no. and surname. Then click next.
5. You’re now brought to this screen.

6. Fill all the asked for details then click Next. For category select ECDE, Primary, or Post-Primary (for secondary). Remember to select your Mean Grade and the Year you sat for the KCSE/EACE/KACE etc.
7. Now you’ll be brought to this screen. Enter the remaining information (scroll down) and edit as necessary.

8. Now you come to the second last stage and here you will be uploading the other documents.

9. Upload each of your documents (start by entering the applicable certificate details- Institution, from, to, specialization, certificate number, etc.) then finish by clicking the add file button as shown.
10. Click save documents to get an opportunity to upload your next document.

Note: Compress your documents (the cyber guy can help) since the portal won’t accept documents bigger than 1MB.

The documents will be displayed nicely on the screen one after another in the order you upload them. Remember to press Save documents after each upload.

11. When you’re done, click

Note: Here you can only upload 3-4 certificates. The rest you will upload in the next screen (as shown below).

This time you will be selecting the type of document then typing a small description and lastly pressing on Choose file.

12. Continue uploading. Here you can upload between 6-8 documents so I would advise you merge documents like transcripts in one PDF file because they’ll be too many.
13. To cut the long story short, proceed to upload everything.

What If I lost my certificates?

If you’ve unfortunately lost any KNEC certificate(KCPE, KCSE, ECDE etc.), visit KNEC’s head office at South C, Nairobi with a copy of your results for the year(s) you wrote your exam.

A confirmation of the results/certificate shall be forwarded to TSC. After this, You’ll  be able to complete the application.

My names are mismatched, what should I do?

If you have a document with mismatched names, swear an affidavit from a registered commissioner of oaths or an advocate.

Be sure to upload the affidavit when loading the other documents.

Can I use photocopies to apply for registration with TSC?

Nope! You should only upload original documents.

As I said, you can request for a confirmation of results as per question 1 above.

Are the documents to be certified?

Scanned copies of your original documents are needed.

If not, photocopies are to be certified if they’re to be used.

Can I use result slips?

Only use original certificates.

What if I lost my TSC certificate?

If you have lost your TSC registration certificate, you are free to apply for a duplicate TSC certificate online.

Obtain a police abstract, scan it, and upload it when applying.
