Well, in Kenya, there are only two accredited dental schools where you can pursue a bachelor’s degree in dental surgery.

So, below are the dental schools, as well as the KUCCPS cluster points for the course and the fee per academic year.

Moi University Bachelor of Dental Surgery cluster points

2018 cut-off points: 42.718

2019 cut-off points: 43.652

2020 cut-off points: 43.885

2021 cut-off points: 43.663

2022 cut-off points: 44.07

Tuition fee per academic year: Kshs. 612,000

 

University of Nairobi Bachelor of Dental Surgery cluster points

2018 cut-off points: 43.07

2019 cut-off points: 44.236

2020 cut-off points: 44.455

2021 cut-off points: 44.182

2022 cut-off points: 44.334

Tuition fee per academic year: Kshs. 521,000

 

Bachelor of dental surgery KUCCPS requirements

To be eligible for admission to the bachelor of dental surgery program at the dental schools listed above, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

A KCSE mean grade of B (plain) or its equivalent

In addition, you must meet the following specific subject requirements:

Cluster subject requirements:

  • Biology B (plain)
  • Chemistry B (plain)
  • B (plain) in either English or Kiswahili
  • B (plain) in either Mathematics or Physics

However, because the course is highly competitive, sometimes only those with grade As get a chance to study under government sponsorship, despite the minimal requirements being slightly lower.

Nonetheless, your other option is to study as privately sponsored (as a self-sponsored student), but you must hurry up in submitting your application since the program slots are limited.

 

Alternative qualifications

You can also apply for the BDS program if you have a three-year diploma from a medical training institution recognized and accredited by the KMPD in any of the following disciplines:

  • Dental Technology,
  • Dental Surgery Assistant,
  • Dental Hygiene,
  • Community Oral Health,
  • Clinical Medicine,
  • Laboratory Technology,
  • Radiography,
  • Pharmaceutical technology,
  • Nursing,

Or,

  • Other equivalent disciplines.

In addition, if you have a diploma in any of the disciplines listed above, you must have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) and a credit pass of C+ (plus) in the required cluster subjects.

Also, eligible are holders of any degree in biological sciences or equivalent qualifications from a recognized university.

 

Duration of study

Regardless of which university you attend, the course usually takes five (5) years to complete.

To be clear, the program consists of taught coursework, practicals, research projects, tutorials, seminars, and clinical work.

 

Important reminder: Please keep in mind that, in order to legally practice dentistry in Kenya after completing the bachelor of dental surgery program, you must register with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council (KMPDC).

How to apply for the bachelor of dental surgery program

There are two options for applying to the program: either as a government-sponsored student or as a privately sponsored (self-sponsored) student.

So, if you want to be sponsored by the government (and thus receive government scholarships and loans), you must apply through the KUCCPS student portal once it opens for applications.

Otherwise, if you want to enroll in the program as a self-sponsored student, then you must apply online through the universities’ application portals or obtain the application form in person from the admission office.

Nonetheless, as a newly qualified dentist, you can expect to earn between Kshs. 40,000 and Kshs. 120,000 per month in a public or private dental clinic.

However, with several years of experience and expertise, your salary can significantly rise to Kshs. 300,000 or more, especially if you specialize in becoming a dental surgeon.
