The Engineers Board of Kenya (ERB) has accredited the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to offer several engineering courses.

The College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) at JKUAT offers the following programs in the various schools.

·School of Electrical, Electronics & Information Engineering (SEEIE)

JKUAT engineering courses under the school of School of Electrical, Electronics & Information Engineering (SEEIE) are as follows:

1.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering  (5-Years program)

The degree exposes you to electronics, telecommunication systems, electrical machines, and even power systems.

Overall, you’re trained on how to systematically and analytically approach electrical/electronic engineering tasks including design, implementation, maintenance procedures, and research work on electrical/electronic systems.

Where can graduates in Electrical and Electronics Engineering  work?

Jobs abound in manufacturing firms, telecommunication companies, media (electronic as well as print), power utilities, energy firms, and more.

2.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Electronics and Computer Engineering (5-Years program)

This engineering discipline encompasses the science and the technology of designing, constructing, implementing, and maintaining both the software and hardware components used in modern computing systems and other computer-controlled equipment.

This is not just about computer systems but it also extends to consumer electronics including television sets, video game consoles, and mobile phones.

In short, it merges two engineering segments: computer science and electronics engineering.

You can find opportunities in consumer electronics manufacturing organizations, telecommunication businesses, the IT industry, healthcare equipment manufacturing firms, etc.

3.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Telecommunications and Information Engineering (5-Years program)

The purpose of this degree is to create qualified manpower for the ever-growing telecommunication and information engineering industry.

As a graduate, you’re expected to be skilled in areas such as the designing and the installation of various telecommunications equipment/facilities including advanced electronic switching systems and fiber optics.

You’ll also be involved in a variety of computer-science related disciplines, for example, autonomous/mobile robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing.

·School of Civil, Environmental, & Geospatial Engineering (SCEGE)

Here you can enroll for the following programs:

1.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Civil Engineering (5 Years program)

Civil engineering focuses on the design and construction of bridges, roads, buildings, dams, water supply, wastewater systems, airports, transportation systems, coastal structures, tunnels, etc.

Where can graduates in Civil Engineering work?

As a civil engineer, you work in infrastructure projects in both the private and public sectors.

Your employers could be the construction industry, the state, NGOs, and utility companies.

You can also work as a private contractor (and makes bucketloads of money, I should say).

2.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Geomatic Engineering and Geospatial Information Science (4 Years program)

This degree teaches you how to apply High-Tec technology in land mapping and mapping.

Here is an example of covered technologies:

• GPS(global navigation satellite positioning systems).
• Remote sensing methods like Airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging).
• Terrestrial laser scanners.

This 4-year course brings together disciplines like computing, mapping, surveying, cartography, environmental sciences, visualization, and statistics in the collection, analysis, and finally, modeling of geo–information or associated information.

Where can graduates of Geomatic Engineering and Geospatial Information Science work?

Graduates of this course may find work in both public and private sectors as archaeologists, geologists, geographers, and environmental scientists.

• School of Mechanical, Manufacturing, & Materials Engineering (SoMMME)

This is your college if you’re interested in a career in areas like mechanical engineering and marine engineering.

In total, there are 4 undergraduate courses under this school as listed below.

1.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Mechatronic Engineering (5-Years program).

The degree program gives you an in-depth understanding of contemporary manufacturing technologies along with expertise in robotics, automation, electronics, and computer-based technologies.

It could be a fantastic course because the demand for skilled mechatronic engineers is growing rapidly as the world becomes computerized and automated.

Where can graduates of Mechatronic Engineering work?

You can work in a couple of industries including aviation, manufacturing, food processing, automobile, consumer electronics, and more.

2.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Mechanical Engineering (5-Years program).

Mechanical engineers build power-producing machines like electric generators, steam/gas turbines, and internal combustion engines.

You may also be involved in designing power-using machines like refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

4.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Mining & Mineral Processing Engineering (5-Years program).

This program’s goal is to produce highly specialized engineers for Kenya’s nascent mining and minerals processing industry.

In addition to the core units, you will take prescribed elective units in mining/mineral processing engineering.

Where can graduates of Mining & Mineral Processing Engineering work?

Jobs exist in the mining industry and other industries involved with materials processing.

• School of Biosystems & Environmental Engineering (SoBEE)

Here are the engineering courses offered by the School of Biosystems & Environmental engineering at JKUAT.

1.   Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering (5-Years)

This makes you a competent agricultural & biosystems engineer.

Among the skills taught are technical and biological skills required to tackle the issues hampering agro-industrial development including sub-optimal utilization of natural resources.

You can major in water, soil, and environmental engineering or Bio-mechanical and Processing Engineering.

Where can graduates of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering work?

Jobs cut across both the private and public sectors particularly in the design and engineering of bio-processing structures, bio-processing machines, irrigation & drainage systems, waste management systems, and more.

Engineering courses in JKUAT and qualifications (engineering courses in JKUAT requirements)

To be considered for admission into undergraduate engineering courses at JKUAT, you must attain the following qualifications:

Have at least a C+ KCSE mean grade plus the following grades (at least) in the course-specific individual cluster subjects:

Alternative A: Mathematics C+, Physics C+, Chemistry C+, Kiswahili/English C+, and C+ in any Group II, III, IV, or V subjects.

NB: A C+ in Geography is also required for BSc. in Geomatic Engineering&Geospatial Information Systems.

Alternative B: Mathematics C+, Physical Sciences B, Biological Sciences C+, English/Kiswahili C+ (plus) and C+ any Group II, III, IV, or V subjects, or an equivalent qualification.

NB: A C+ in Geography is also required for BSc. in Geomatic Engineering&Geospatial Information Systems.

OR

An ordinary diploma in a relevant engineering discipline from institutions recognized by the Senate, KNEC (Kenya National Examinations Council), or other accredited external examinations bodies (as approved by the Senate).

In addition, if you’re a diploma holder, you must have satisfactorily met the specified mean and subject grades at your O-level or have an equivalent qualification.

Note that application forms are obtained after paying a non-refundable course application fee of Shs. 1500.00.

Engineering courses in JKUAT: Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Does JKUAT offer diploma courses in engineering?

No. Although JKUAT used to offer engineering diplomas in disciplines such as civil and water engineering in some of their campuses, they no longer have these programs.

But the university still teaches diplomas in non-engineering areas including ICT and architecture.

Final thoughts

The most important thing when choosing an engineering course is ensuring that it’s in line with your passion.

The other crucial consideration is to make sure that the program you go for is accredited by EBK- Pursuing an engineering course that’s not approved by EBK amounts to wasting time and money since you won’t be allowed to practice in Kenya.
