How do you get Cyber Security Courses in Kenya: Full Career Guide After KCSE?

In this post, I’m going to be sharing with you a super sure path that you can follow that will

take you to a job in cyber security within time because people take long because they

don’t know how it should be done. So, if you want to get into cyber security and

that’s your passion read this post about Cyber Security Courses in Kenya: Full Career Guide After KCSE

to the end and go implement what I tell you. You will come to thank me later.

The first thing you must do is;

Get a degree in computer science

Get a degree in IT

Get a degree in BBIT

It doesn’t matter. you need to get that degree first. If you ask me,

I would recommend either a degree in computer science or a

degree in pure IT. There are degrees in forensic or IT security specifically,

but it’s better to do a general ICT courses in Kenya or degree because it will introduce

you to so many diverse topics before you come to special lines. It would be better to

do that broad one because it will introduce you to everything in it including

those that are relevant to security before you come to specialize. So

degrade or ethical hacking courses Kenya first.

The second thing you must do is;

You must get the cyber security certifications Kenya.

I told you HRs loves that degree. But what we love even much more is the

Certifications, and in cyber security having very powerful certifications is

one way of bypassing the veterans because generally organizations the big

ones especially prefer to hire the veterans in the industry. But if you

have done the right cyber security training Kenya certifications, you will be one step

ahead of everyone. You’ll be one step ahead of so many other aspiring cyber security pros.

So which certifications do I recommend? start with;

1. CompTIA A+

This is basically to help you understand the help desk operations. In

other words, troubleshooting and repairing hardware and a bit of software is a good

beginning point because later on you need to be able to understand how

these devices work before you’re able to secure them. So, you can start with

CompTIA A+

2. CCNA

You need to do CCNA. There’s no way you will run from CCNA because again

we are saying how do you secure what you do not understand?

A lot of cyber security roles includes securing the networking systems and the best

way to learn and understand how networking systems work is by doing a

CCNA. Make sure that you learn all of those packet tracer activities, you

simulate if you don’t have the hardware because it’s going to be very

helpful and you also want to pass that CCNA exam. Make sure that you write that

exam and you pass.

3. COMPTIA SECURITY +

This is very theoretical, but I think it is one of the best ways of getting yourself to

understand the lingo of the industry. One of the best ways of getting those

details, getting grasp of every other term in cyber security is by doing

CompTIA security +

Actually, you could do A+ then you can you do security plus and

then of course CCN A. Again, we are saying make sure you get those papers,

make sure you write and pass those exams. And what I recommend is do not

wait until you graduate for you to do these certifications. Why? Because at

the campus you have a lot of free time. So, you can make better use of that free time by

pursuing this even if it’s online cyber security courses Kenya. You can do that on the side

So that by the time you are graduating with your degree you also have these papers,

they will give you a lot of leeway when it comes to looking for jobs, because the next step is starting to think about internships.

4. Now look for the right internship

This is absolutely important. When I say the right internship, it doesn’t mean that you go

look for internship in Microsoft because it may not be forth coming. What I

want you to do is first get yourself busy in the industry and look for entry level cyber security jobs Kenya. But we must note that at this point you may not be doing any cyber security work.

At this point you cannot actually afford it to choose. You cannot afford to select things.

It doesn’t matter whether you are doing;

help desk work

network support

general system administration duties

It doesn’t matter. You want to be there first, why? If it can be a paid

internship, you’ll be miles ahead because you’ll start getting some money.

Yeah, that can help you pay for the next phase of certification that I would

recommend that you do because the other one that we did are just basic and now we

want to get into those that really matter in the industry. If it’s not a

big internship, no problem. You can talk to your parents, your sponsors or get some

ways of raising the cash to support you as you learn these certifications because

they going to be very very important. But most importantly, while you are in

the internship, you are getting to practice whatever skills you have

learned in the past and you have started building on your CV, that is game

changing. You have started adding some projects on your CV. These are the ones

that make a difference later on. So, you got into the internship, and you are

now there whether paid or not, you are now preparing to start getting into the

solid specialized certifications for cyber security that HR will look for and

the guys up there, the current experts in cyber security out there are looking

for. So, let’s start with the ones the HRs are looking for.

CE H (Certified Ethical Hacker) and C I SM (Certified Information Security Manager)

They are not so hard to pass, they build on your previous knowledge.

The other ones that you would like to do is OffSec Certified Professional (OSCP)

and CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional). These ones are a bit

rigorous. So do these four. So, these four are some of the certifications HRs

are looking for.

If you will pass the original screening stage when applying

for cyber security jobs. So, the next ones are going to be dependent on the

specialization that you’d like to take. By now you know the general rules. You

really know a lot. But now you want to decide what specialization should I

take. Now the main ones are Bug bounty or web application security. If you’re

going to go the direction of specializing in web apps security then

you can do it as offered by HTB CBBH1 (Hack the Box Certified Bug Bounty Hunter)

and if you have decided that maybe you are more interested in network security, consider

doing PNPT (Practical Network Penetration Tester) you have done CCNA and here you have

advance on those you can do PNPT.

Maybe these ones are not known by the HR, but the guys up there are experts. Once

they see that you have done a lot of this, you’ll say this’ a guy we are

probably looking for.

5. Start looking for junior roles in cyber security

So, you have a bit of experience. So probably now you might

secure some poorly paid roles or such. You should not choose again. Start with

these small companies. And while you are doing this what you are targeting is

to start building on connections

Okay, start building on the connections because while in this junior roles you

are working with the person in charge of it. You are likely to be

working with senior people and you can be shadowing them, learning from them

and of course, slowly by slowly you are still advancing your skills. Remember

what is very important is that you are continuously improving on your CV. So

you have added something extra to your CV. You have added something extra to

your LinkedIn. What we are saying is you want to do everything in your hearts

even as you are in these junior roles to start out.

So, you are building your connections, you are still practicing, you are

shadowing the most. So, you are running from them. You are attending events

even online events. You are building connections on LinkedIn. So you are in a

lot but you are working very hard on the side to start out regardless of the way

that you are doing that.

6. Be patient and keep hunting

The junior role is what is going to take you to a senior role because as

we said at the start they don’t take freshers; they are going to prefer veterans. You

must become that better over time. So, you have to;

stay patient

keep hunting

keep checking out there.

Keep applying

Keep building

Keep networking

You are going to platforms like Try Hack Me and continuously learning,

documenting everything on YouTube, documenting maybe

everything on LinkedIn, documenting everything maybe on a blog. Stay

consistent and that is how you’ll come and end up securing this role, that is how

it is, that is how it happens because it’s a sensitive line as we keep saying

the good thing is by the time things fall in place, by the time you land these roles,

the reward can be very handsome. It pays well. So good luck and that marks the end

Thinking about ICT? Learn about the most marketable ICT courses in Kenya in this article and where to train.

According to the World Economic Forum:

50% of all jobs will be automated in the next 10 years.

9 out of every 10 jobs will need digital skills.

50% of the global economy and will be disrupted by ICT technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, Internet of Things (IoT), and more.

In fact, the trend will see the future of work shift change forever- there will be markedly less demand for office support workers, machine operators, and similar low-skill professionals and massive demand for technology professionals like computer engineers and ICT (information communication technology) specialists.

In other words, this is the best time to take an appropriate ICT course in Kenya.

But here is the thing: Not all ICT courses in Kenya will help you get a job. Hell No!

We have moved from the era when just having a computer packages certificate would make you a hotcake. Neither does just having a CISCO certificate guarantee you a job!

The ICT world is moving at breakneck pace and you need to be keen when selecting the course to do to avoid wasting your hard earned money and time doing an unworthy course.

So, which are the most marketable ICT courses in Kenya and where can you pursue them?

Read on for answers..

The most marketable ICT courses in Kenya – best Information technology courses in Kenya to pursue right now

Now, if you’re wondering, I’m an ICT professional so I’m speaking from experience here.

In short, trust me: the following ICT courses will unlock an ocean of opportunities for you after graduating and getting sufficient experience:

1. Cyber Security

Because cyber criminals are becoming cleverer with each passing day, Cyber Security is one of the most marketable courses in Kenya today.

Career prospects are great for Kenyans with the right mix of skills, expertise, and experience in this fast-growing field.

You’ll typically begin in junior cyber security position but you can quickly climb up the ladder if you’re good at it.

Where to Study Cyber security in Kenya

Read this article to find out the best institutions to study cyber security in Kenya.

Note: It’s important to pursue a Diploma or a Degree in ICT (or a related area) before specializing in Cyber Security since many employers ask for a Diploma or a Degree in ICT plus Cyber Security Certifications when recruiting cyber security specialists.

2. Data Science

We are in the era of big data and organizations- from financial institutions to health facilities, and everyone in between- now rely on structured data to make important decisions.

Data science is the course to take if you’re good at numbers and want a career that merges ICT and numbers- it unifies statistics, analytical systems, machine learning, and numerous other similar methods in harvesting and analyzing data.

Where to Study Data Science in Kenya

This course especially goes well with a degree in statistics/ Computer Science/Applied Mathematics/ or Engineering so the best approach is to take it as a short course alongside your Diploma/Degree course.

Read this article to find out the best institutions to study data science in Kenya.

TIME OUT

Hey there! Are you looking for the best courses, top colleges and universities, career guidance, and exciting scholarship opportunities in Kenya? Look no further! Join our Facebook page to stay up-to-date with all the latest information and insights on these topics.

So Please follow Kenya Education Guide on Facebook here for more updates about best courses in Kenya, best colleges and Universities in Kenya, Career choice options, Scholarships in Kenya, etc

Thanks.

Now proceed reading below..

3. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence(AI)

While careers in machine learning are relatively new, the future could be bright for anyone with these skills.

If you’re not aware, machine learning is simply a branch of AI (artificial intelligence) focused on building apps that learn from gathered data and improve accuracy over time with-out having to be programmed to achieve this.

AI is itself all about enabling machines including robots to reason and act as human beings.

As mentioned earlier, machine learning actually fits within the broad data science field and connects AI and data science.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that there are almost infinite possibilities for graduates of these fields.

4. Programming /coding

In order to work properly, computers and devices such as smartphones relies on instructions that they have been fed with about various tasks- in short, they need to be pre-programmed to function.

That is where programmers and developers come in- they write the code (or instructions) that tell devices and computers how to execute tasks.

Some of the most in-demand programming languages that you should learn if you’re interested in programming include:

PHP/Laravel

Python

JavaScript

Java

Also in high-demand is knowledge of Node.js, React, and .NET Core.

And oh, ensure you can build Android and IoS apps.

Where to Study programming in Kenya

Go through the schools in this article and choose one.

Most best paying employers hire programmers with a bachelor’s degree so the best way to approach it is to pursue one of the most popular ICT degree courses in Kenya (IT, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, etc.) while learning these languages on the side (either during holidays or after university classes).

I should add that a Diploma in ICT (including the KNEC Diploma in ICT) is also accepted by a good number of employers too (along with a certificate course in programming).

5. Cloud Computing

Most organizations no longer invest in their own servers and data centres. Instead, they rent processing power and data storage services from providers who have invested in massive server computers and data centers elsewhere- these computing services are delivered via the ‘cloud’ (the internet) hence the use of the term cloud computing.

Simply put, firms can now access more computing power at a reduced cost- Google, Gmail, DropBox, YouTube, and SalesForce are just a few examples of the countless services we access via cloud computing.

Now, your work will be to develop and/or manage the physical and virtual infrastructure that keep cloud computing centers running to ensure their clients continue working seamlessly.

If you want to take this direction, it’s best to a Diploma/Degree first then take up marketable cloud computing certifications such as:

Google Certified Professional_Cloud Architect.

Google Certified Professional_Data Engineer.

W.S Certified Solutions Architect – Associate.

W.S Certified SysOps Administrator.

W.S Certified Developer– Associate.

Microsoft Certified- Microsoft Azure Fundamentals

These certifications can be taken online or you can choose to attend sessions in institutions offering cloud computing courses in Kenya such as AFRALTI.

6. Games development

Another ICT related area you can venture into with the right skills is games development- you’ll simply be building games.

It can be a well-paying area because today’s generation is more into virtual games than tradition physical games.

To succeed here, take courses such as:

Unity Game Development course/Certification

3D Artist Specialization course

Python

If you’re good, you can easily work for some of the biggest gaming companies in the world (remotely).

7. Digital marketing

Almost every single company needs digital marketers- there is no other way to remain relevant in today’s internet-crazy society.

If you have a thing for marketing and find doing it from behind your screen a much friendlier prospect than visiting clients physically door-to-door, then consider taking a digital marketing course.

I should add that the course doesn’t really need any particular qualifications although having a degree/diploma in marketing/any business field can be an advantage.
