Here are the requirements for diploma in teacher education in case you’re interested in becoming a primary school teacher in Kenya (Updated as per latest KUCCPS requirements):

Requirements for diploma in teacher education –what you need to qualify for the diploma in teacher education intake

KUCCPS portal requirements for applicants interested in the Diploma in Teacher Education has been published as just a C plain.

In other words, the only requirement now is just a KCSE mean grade of C(plain) for the above two courses….

 

Remember the former entry requirements(minimum) for the  diploma course in primary teacher education  were as follows:

• KCSE Mean Grade: C (Plain) / its equivalent.

In addition, you needed a C (Plain) in these subjects:

• English
• Kiswahili
• Mathematics
• Any one Humanities subject
• Any one Sciences subject

But that did not quite work because not many KCSE graduates were managing the grades especially the cluster requirements leading to very low enrollment numbers in nearly all primary teacher training colleges.

Now, due to the changeover of Kenya’s education system to CBC, the ministry has officially done away with the DPTE and ECDE Diploma – and in its place you now apply for Diploma in Teacher Education.

The other change is that you apply through the KUCCPS portal, unlike in the past when you had to apply via the ministry of education sub county offices.

Keep in mind that once you graduate, you are seemingly expected to be teaching from Pre-primary (PP1) all the way to Grade 6..

Requirements for diploma in education primary option – documents needed

Your grades have already been entered into the KUCCPS portal so no documents are needed to be allowed to apply.

You will, however, be asked to provide a list of important documents after you join the TTC you choose.

Typically, the documents you’ll be asked for are:

1. A copy of your KCSE certificate/result slip (certified).
2. 2 passport size photographs (certified)taken recently (Avoid photo me photographs).
3. A copy of your ID Card (both sides- certified)/Registration Acknowledgement(A.R.A) – certified.
4. A copy of your School Leaving Certificate(certified).
5. One copy of any Co-curricular Activity Certificates you have obtained (certified).

I should add that candidates may be required to provide evidence of adhering to good moral values and positive behaviour such as a police clearance certificate.

Diploma in Teacher Education Duration

The duration shall be three(3) years according to the approved Diploma in Teacher Education Curriculum.

The teacher trainees are expected to cover the needed coursework and practicum hours within the duration.

Also note that you shall undertake a 3-months micro-teaching course during the period- the micro-teaching course is a pre-requisite for you to go for teaching practice.

KUCCPS application guide step by step

Here is how to apply for diploma in primary teacher education…

1. Visit the KUCCPS website on kuccps.net (when the portal is open)
2. To “log in” Enter your KCSE Index Number, Year of KCSE, and your password (KCPE Index or Birth Certificate Number).
3. Next, revise or just make a new course application as appropriate by simply clicking on the Application/revision tab on KUCCPS website.
4. Finally, confirm whether you have qualified for the course, you have selected.
5. If yes, finish the process by submitting.

The good thing is that even those students who had been forced to study for an ECDE diploma because they did not meet the previous strict requirements can apply to do the Diploma in education, primary school teaching option.

Overall, you should know your fate within a few weeks of the KUCCPS portal closing- keep checking the portal for notifications may be after 1 week after applying.

Diploma in teacher education qualification -Final thoughts

Keep in mind that the Diploma in Teacher Education allows you to teach Grade 1-6…it is not official who can qualify to teach junior secondary though currently it is being handled by primary diploma holders who have undergone CBC training.

In terms of the fees, you will pay Kshs.  72076 for the first year of the course, regardless of where you’ll be studying.

But remember there’s a possibility that teaching diploma students will start getting government capitation and scholarships – not to mention HELB loans- so financial constraints should not worry you.
