1. Diploma in any ICT or computer-related line. 

Why? Technology is not going to go anywhere. Yeah, I know people say that a lot of

people have done IT and they are jobless, it’s because these people, these students, do

it the wrong way. In this field, what you need more is skills. And any student

who is bright enough to take their diploma in

• cyber security

In this post, I’m going to be sharing with you the rest of the diploma courses that

you can do at Kenyatta University if you got a C-. 

We are doing this because many of you have been asking us to do a

post on that so that you can be able to make the right choices. 

My name is CPA John Getahi, a part-time lecturer in one of the universities in Kenya. 

I hold two degrees, one in business management and the other one in IT. 

I also hold a postgraduate diploma in education.

During my spare time, I like mentoring young people regarding career choices.

Let us get into it. So these are the C minus courses that you

can do at Kenyatta University. Bear in mind that these are diploma courses.

The first one, if you want to become a tutor at the early childhood level, 

that is, pre-primary, as they call it today, you can do

1. Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education. 

This is in the school of education and lifelong learning. 

You need to have a C minus. There are no cluster requirements. 

Of course, you can also be admitted to this program if you have: 

• Previously done a certificate in ECE, that is 

Early Childhood Care and Education

• You have a TSC registration. 

2.  Diploma in accountancy. 

This is at KU TVET School under their school of business, Economics, and

Tourism. 

You need to have a C minus at KCSE, or you can also be accepted 

if you had a

• D plus at KCSE 

But you have

• A certificate in a relevant area of study. 

For example, a certificate in accountancy from KU or any other accredited institution. 

So a C minus or a D+, plus a certificate in areas like accountancy, business administration,

business management, etc., from an accredited institution. 

3. Diploma in Business Management 

This is again under their TVET school in the school of 

Business Economics and Tourism. 

C minus or just like the way we saw for the diploma in accountancy 

a D+, plus a certificate in a relevant area, including a

• background in business management 

For example, a certificate in business administration, etc.

from KU or any other recognized institution.

This is one of my favorite. 

4. Diploma in Chinese language and culture

I think Chinese is slowly becoming one of the most in-demand 

languages in the world. Foreign languages also in Kenya. 

It’s a good course to take. They are offering it under their 

Law Arts and Social Sciences School, under their Chinese institute.

It’s a good program. You need to have a

• C minus at KCSE.

And you also need to have a 

• C minus in English or Kiswahili. 

You can also be accepted if you had a C plain at KCSE, but you have

• a certificate in Chinese language and culture 

Awarded at KU or level two Chinese language proficiency test, as

administered by KU.

I think if, for example, you want to work in China, you want to work with Chinese

here in Kenya, I think having these qualifications is a good thing.

5. Diploma in Communication and Media 

If you like journalism, I think it’s better to do a General Diploma in Communication 

media.

• C minus at KCSE

 And here are cluster requirements 

• C plain at least in English or Kiswahili
• C minus or its equivalent in one of these subjects

Geography, History and Government. 

If not so, a B+ at KCSE or its equivalent, but then have 

• a certificate in communication and media or journalism 

or any other relevant field from an accredited institution, or even KU, 

or even 

• a certificate in mass communication plus some experience in that field. 

So you can upgrade your certificate in journalism or mass communication at KU

to be a diploma, if you have had some experience in that field. 

6. Diploma in Film and Theatre Arts

Theater, if you like acting and such, this could be a good one. 

• C minus at KCSE or equivalent 

But also, you must prove that you have previously participated in

theater art, or film, or mass communication. 

You can also be accepted into this program if you have a D+ at KCSE, 

but you have a certificate already in 

• Theater arts
• Film
• Mass communication. 

Teachers with a B1 certificate can also take this course, provided they have 

a minimum of 

• division three 

Like the others, they must also prove that they have participated in the past 

in creative arts.

7. Diploma in Fine Arts 

This is another diploma that you can do with a C minus at KCSE. 

You need to have a mean grade of C minus, and for this one, you

must have a minimum of 

• C minus in design 

If not, you can qualify for this diploma if you had 

• A certificate in Art design and a good portfolio of artworks.

For this one you have to go through an interview

Or a certificate in art and design from a recognized institution. 

Another one acceptable is a portfolio of artworks. 

But here you have to go through an interview, so these ones you are supposed

to show them to the selection panel. 

8. Diploma in Hospitality Management

In the School of Business, Economics, and Tourism, you can also take a diploma in

hospitality management if you like the hospitality industry.

It is a C-. Also, you must have at least a D+ in the following subjects. 

At least two of them, the first alternative is; 

• D+ in either English or Kiswahili, Chemistry, or Biology 

If not so; 

• D+ in English, Kiswahili, or biological sciences, or physical sciences

or home science 

So let me clarify that, English or  Kiswahili D+ at least, then the other

D+ will have to come from either  biological sciences or physical sciences

depending on the one that you took, or home science, so at least a D+ in this

combination or home science. 

Finally, you can qualify for this program if you have a 

• D+ at KCSE

But you have already done a Certificate in an area related to hospitality

such as; 

• hotel and accommodation
• catering 
• or even hospitality itself 

And already you have two years of relevant work experience. 

9. Diploma in Human Resource Management (TVET)

This is a good one. Again, you need a C- at KCSE, and you can also qualify

alternatively, if you had a mean grade of

• D plus at KCSE, but you have done a certificate in HR from a recognized institution. 

10. Diploma in Information Technology( IT )

 This is a popular one, and you can do it if you have computers.

This is in the school of pure and applied sciences. C minus at KCSE or its equivalent 

and you must have a; 

• C minus at least in math and English 

If not so, have a 

• D+ at KCSE and add at least a C minus in both English and Kiswahili 

And also, you must have a; 

• Certificate in IT. 

So if you have a certificate in IT and you have at least a C minus in both 

Maths and English, and at KCSE you had a D+, then you can also be taken.

11. Diploma in marketing (TVET)

You need a C minus at KCSC or its equivalent. You can also qualify for the 

diploma in marketing if you have a D+ at KCSE, but you already

have done a certificate in marketing or a related area from KU or any other

accredited institution. 

12. Diplom in music

C minus, and you must have at least a 

• C+ in music 

Or if not so, have a 

• Certificate in Music with a credit pass from KU or ABRSM grade 5 theory and grade 4

practical. 

13. Diploma in Project Management

C minus at KCSE or D plus at KCSE, but you have a certificate already in

project management from KNEC, KU, or any other accredited institution

14. Diploma in Project Monitoring and Evaluation

C minus at KCSE or a D+ plus and a certificate in a relevant line from KU or any other accredited institution, such as KNEC. 

15. Diploma in Management and IT 

This is also an option under the School of Pure and Applied Sciences. 

C minus at KCSE or its equivalent, and you must have a 

• C minus in maths and English. 

So that one is important. If not so, you can have a 

• D plus at KCSE, but with a certificate already in a related line, in addition to

having at least a C minus in both math and English 

but having  a D plus mean grade at KCSE plus a certificate already in records

management and IT from KNEC, KMTC, or any other accredited institution is

acceptable. 

16. Diploma in sports administration and management.

If you have an interest in sports, you can do this one. C minus at KCSCE.

or have a; 

• P1 or S1 teacher certificate
• KU certificate course in sports administration and management. 

17. Diploma in Tourism Management

C minus at KCSE. You must have done any two of the following subjects 

at KCSE and gotten a D minus in each one.

• Biology or biological sciences, D+
• Geography or History D+ 
• Business educational computer studies D+
• English/ any foreign language D+

If not so, have a D+ at KCSE and then a certificate in tourism or 

a related line, plus 2 years of experience. 

18. Diploma in Security Management and Police Studies

If you are working in the security sector, or maybe you are a police officer 

and you want to get a promotion, do a diploma in security management and police studies. 

This one needs a C minus at KCSE or equivalent, or even

• A certificate in police studies from a recognized institution. 

So those are the Kenyatta University TVET diploma courses that you can do 

with a C minus. 

For the KU application process, go to www.ku.ac.ke, and you will see the 

option to apply there. 

The fee is from Ksh 75,000 per year. KU diploma intake is mainly in 

January and September.

• people who write vlogs
• people who do YouTubetubes

And number two;

• comedians in Kenya

 Most of the popular journalists, in quotes, that is, people who
work in these big media stations, the likes of Churchill and Eric Omondi.

Those are comedians, and you are there, you are saying you
Want to go and do journalism, please don’t.

Because we are saying that journalism, the traditional journalism as a field, as an
industry is actually on a decline and very soon, because of the advent of
streaming services like Netflix and Showmax, I think journalism as we know it
is not going to be there.

I actually don’t think there’s going to be a future for traditional TV stations,

Traditional radio stations and the like. Traditional newspapers, I think they 

are going out.  That is The Reality of Journalism Careers in Kenya today.

If you are serious about succeeding in life and you are passionate, saying that 

you want to go and do journalism is a wrong choice. So what should you do instead? 

I have three best courses in Kenya, both at the diploma and at the degree level, 

that I think could give you better career prospects than journalism.

The first course that you should do instead of journalism courses in Kenya is;

1. PR and communications

Yeah, we are talking about a course that will teach you how to
handle corporate PR. It may not be the most in-demand course 

to speak the truth because many organizations will not hire
a lot of PR officers. But again, it opens up so many opportunities for you
in the communication field. You could work not just as a PR officer but also in
marketing departments as a media officer for some of these organizations.

If you can pair this with a bit of digital marketing skills, then I think you will 

have opened for yourself a lot of opportunities both in the corporate world and

also in the digital communications field. So it’s actually better than journalism by
far because those institutions offering this one and they are knowledgeable in 

what they are doing. They have integrated inside their programs a lot of the digital

way of doing PR and communication. So it’s a better option.

 Another, and this is my favorite. This is always one of my all-time favorites.

2. Sales and marketing

So you feel apprehensive about PR because we are saying

organizations don’t need so many PR professionals. You could just do sales
and marketing. This can take you to so many careers in marketing and sales.

There is no single business that doesn’t need a marketer. There’s no single
business that doesn’t need a salesperson. So the last people to lack
jobs in this world, in my opinion, will be sales and marketing people. Think about it. 

So if there are sure bet marketable courses in Kenya out there, and you are that guy 

who feels that I like being in front-facing careers, that is, careers that face the public directly.

With the public directly, I mean sales and marketing can be a sure bet.

Don’t risk doing journalism degree kenya when it’s actually going out.

 You can see that even media Companies like Standard are not able to face salaries, not forgetting that many of them have fired a lot of journalists, and others are doing so. This is actually happening. Please consider doing sales and marketing.

There’s another one. I have selected the best degree courses kenya

for you because I believe people who want to do mass communication courses in kenya

are people who like;

• Dealing with the public.
• They passed languages
• They have also passed a bit of History

3. law

law can also be an option, and LLB, and of course, go and 

pass the diploma in law at the Kenya School of Law. Very, very important. And
you get admitted into the bar or the bench. That is, you can either become a
judge or work from their side being a lawyer.

I think lawyers will always have opportunities. Yeah. People are cutting deals.

People need to be represented in courts. I mean, lawyers make some quick money. You walk into an advocate office. You draft an agreement.

Maybe two people are buying a lad. One is a Seller one is a buyer.

Just like that, the lawyer pockets Ksh 10,000. So this is one of the best ones.

Yeah, I know it’s there, but a strategic person doing this
One, I think they have a lot of opportunities, at least in the next 10
years it will remain very, very relevant. You can also do;

4. Political Science

It doesn’t have very clear roles apart from working as a;

• political advisor
• Sometimes you can work as a diplomat
• Some of them can get opportunities in International relations with political
  Science.

 Especially if you think that you could make a politician. Those guys have money. Those
guys, I think they live a fancy life, especially those who are strategic. So
doing journalism, you can do this, get a way of working with the upcoming politicians.

At some point, there are so many of them around. And then grow. Hang on to them, and eventually you could get those seats yourself; if not, you could work in parliament, 

you could work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I think there are quite a number of
opportunities, and  I don’t think that this is a flooded course per se. 

Instead of doing journalism, personally, I wouldn’t find political science being
a bad one. Don’t do journalism, guys don’t do journalism, you will cry with your own two
Eyes. Others are  running away, and you are trying to go there, and it doesn’t make sense.

 Of course, you can also consider doing digital journalism, but I don’t find it
making a lot of sense because anybody with a smartphone, even me, can become a

reporter. So I don’t know where you’re going to sell your news

these days, for you to start out and make enough money. Yeah, digital is
better than traditional journalism. But I still don’t think that it makes sense
because there’s nothing to distinguish you from somebody like me who hasn’t done it. 

But they have a smartphone. It’s just a matter of recording, opening a
Facebook page, maybe posting my videos there on TikTok or Instagram.

In this post, I’m going to be sharing with you a super sure path that you can follow that will

take you to a job in cyber security within time because people take long because they

don’t know how it should be done. So, if you want to get into cyber security and

The first thing you must do is;

• Get a degree in computer science
• Get a degree in IT
• Get a degree in BBIT

It doesn’t matter. you need to get that degree first. If you ask me,

I would recommend either a degree in computer science or a

degree in pure IT. There are degrees in forensic or IT security specifically,

but it’s better to do a general ICT courses in Kenya or degree because it will introduce

you to so many diverse topics before you come to special lines. It would be better to

do that broad one because it will introduce you to everything in it including

those that are relevant to security before you come to specialize. So

degrade or ethical hacking courses Kenya first.

The second thing you must do is;

• You must get the cyber security certifications Kenya.

I told you HRs loves that degree. But what we love even much more is the

Certifications, and in cyber security having very powerful certifications is

one way of bypassing the veterans because generally organizations the big

ones especially prefer to hire the veterans in the industry. But if you

have done the right cyber security training Kenya certifications, you will be one step

ahead of everyone. You’ll be one step ahead of so many other aspiring cyber security pros.

So which certifications do I recommend? start with;

1.    CompTIA A+

This is basically to help you understand the help desk operations. In

other words, troubleshooting and repairing hardware and a bit of software is a good

beginning point because later on you need to be able to understand how

these devices work before you’re able to secure them. So, you can start with

CompTIA A+

2.    CCNA

You need to do CCNA. There’s no way you will run from CCNA because again

we are saying how do you secure what you do not understand?

A lot of cyber security roles includes securing the networking systems and the best

way to learn and understand how networking systems work is by doing a

CCNA. Make sure that you learn all of those packet tracer activities, you

simulate if you don’t have the hardware because it’s going to be very

helpful and you also want to pass that CCNA exam. Make sure that you write that

exam and you pass.

3.    COMPTIA SECURITY +

This is very theoretical, but I think it is one of the best ways of getting yourself to

understand the lingo of the industry. One of the best ways of getting those

details, getting grasp of every other term in cyber security is by doing

CompTIA security +

Actually, you could do A+ then you can you do security plus and

then of course CCN A. Again, we are saying make sure you get those papers,

make sure you write and pass those exams. And what I recommend is do not

wait until you graduate for you to do these certifications. Why? Because at

the campus you have a lot of free time. So, you can make better use of that free time by

pursuing this even if it’s online cyber security courses Kenya. You can do that on the side

So that by the time you are graduating with your degree you also have these papers,

they will give you a lot of leeway when it comes to looking for jobs, because the next step is starting to think about internships.

4.    Now look for the right internship

This is absolutely important. When I say the right internship, it doesn’t mean that you go

look for internship in Microsoft because it may not be forth coming. What I

want you to do is first get yourself busy in the industry and look for entry level cyber security jobs Kenya. But we must note that at this point you may not be doing any cyber security work.

At this point you cannot actually afford it to choose. You cannot afford to select things.

• help desk work
• network support
• general system administration duties

It doesn’t matter. You want to be there first, why? If it can be a paid

internship, you’ll be miles ahead because you’ll start getting some money.

Yeah, that can help you pay for the next phase of certification that I would

recommend that you do because the other one that we did are just basic and now we

want to get into those that really matter in the industry. If it’s not a

big internship, no problem. You can talk to your parents, your sponsors or get some

ways of raising the cash to support you as you learn these certifications because

they going to be very very important. But most importantly, while you are in

the internship, you are getting to practice whatever skills you have

learned in the past and you have started building on your CV, that is game

changing. You have started adding some projects on your CV. These are the ones

that make a difference later on. So, you got into the internship, and you are

now there whether paid or not, you are now preparing to start getting into the

solid specialized certifications for cyber security that HR will look for and

the guys up there, the current experts in cyber security out there are looking

for. So, let’s start with the ones the HRs are looking for.

CE H (Certified Ethical Hacker) and C I SM (Certified Information Security Manager)

They are not so hard to pass, they build on your previous knowledge.

The other ones that you would like to do is OffSec Certified Professional (OSCP)

and CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional). These ones are a bit

rigorous. So do these four. So, these four are some of the certifications HRs

are looking for.

If you will pass the original screening stage when applying

for cyber security jobs. So, the next ones are going to be dependent on the

specialization that you’d like to take. By now you know the general rules. You

really know a lot. But now you want to decide what specialization should I

take. Now the main ones are Bug bounty or web application security. If you’re

going to go the direction of specializing in web apps security then

you can do it as offered by HTB CBBH1 (Hack the Box Certified Bug Bounty Hunter)

and if you have decided that maybe you are more interested in network security, consider

doing PNPT (Practical Network Penetration Tester) you have done CCNA and here you have

advance on those you can do PNPT.

Maybe these ones are not known by the HR, but the guys up there are experts. Once

they see that you have done a lot of this, you’ll say this’ a guy we are

probably looking for.

5.    Start looking for junior roles in cyber security

So, you have a bit of experience. So probably now you might

secure some poorly paid roles or such. You should not choose again. Start with

these small companies. And while you are doing this what you are targeting is

to start building on connections

Okay, start building on the connections because while in this junior roles you

are working with the person in charge of it. You are likely to be

working with senior people and you can be shadowing them, learning from them

and of course, slowly by slowly you are still advancing your skills. Remember

what is very important is that you are continuously improving on your CV. So

you have added something extra to your CV. You have added something extra to

your LinkedIn. What we are saying is you want to do everything in your hearts

even as you are in these junior roles to start out.

So, you are building your connections, you are still practicing, you are

shadowing the most. So, you are running from them. You are attending events

even online events. You are building connections on LinkedIn. So you are in a

lot but you are working very hard on the side to start out regardless of the way

that you are doing that.

6.    Be patient and keep hunting

The junior role is what is going to take you to a senior role because as

we said at the start they don’t take freshers; they are going to prefer veterans. You

must become that better over time. So, you have to;

• stay patient
• keep hunting
• keep checking out there.
• Keep applying
• Keep building
• Keep networking

You are going to platforms like Try Hack Me and continuously learning,

documenting everything on YouTube, documenting maybe

everything on LinkedIn, documenting everything maybe on a blog. Stay

consistent and that is how you’ll come and end up securing this role, that is how

it is, that is how it happens because it’s a sensitive line as we keep saying

the good thing is by the time things fall in place, by the time you land these roles,

How to become a TVET trainer in Kenya (how to become an instructor in TVET colleges in Kenya)

So how specifically do you become a TVET trainer in Kenya? My name is trainer John from Kenya

education guide.

I teach in a few institutions in Kenya.

TVET trainer requirements in Kenya – How you are supposed to prepare to be hired for TVET trainer jobs in Kenya (Step by Step)

STEP 1 – Get a Qualification Relevant to TVET teaching

Number one, you need to have at least a craft  certificate. But maybe it makes more sense for you to have a diploma.

So have a diploma in a relevant line is a must have.

And when I say relevant line, I mean when you look at TVETs in Kenya, you can see what they

are teaching…

1. Electrical
2. Hairdressing
3. Accounting,
4. Business management,
5. Building technology.

There is so many…so many courses they have.

So have a diploma or a higher national diploma

Maybe you have advanced…if so,  it’s also acceptable.

Or a bachelors.

So that’s the first qualification.

You will only have your diploma or certificate or high national diploma

accepted if it comes from any of the following bodies:

• KNEC
• Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development
• KASNEB
• National Polytechnics
• NITA (National Industrial Training Authority)
• An accredited university -could be a local university or a foreign university. It doesn’t matter as long as it is an accredited one.

STEP 2 – Attend Pedagogy Training

The next step is making sure that you have undergone pedagogy training i.e you get teaching skills you (you must have been taught how to teach).

Now, the recognized pedagogy qualifications by the TVETA authority are either have a:

Diploma in technical education-So if you have plumbing for example or an accounting qualification diploma and then you have a diploma in technical education in that line, perfect.

If you have a diploma in education also perfect. You can also be hired if you have a final level

instructor training from KTTC, the former Kenya Technical Teachers College. Nowadays it is called Kenya school of TVET.

Anybody with a final level instructor training from KTTC will be perfect.

Another one that is considered is an education degree.

If you have bachelor of education degree again in in a relevant line, you are good. Also Bachelor of Technology Education degree is considered.

Also another one is Bachelor of Technical Education. The other one is Bachelor of Nursing.

Also Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and Extension.

The other qualifications that are accepted for you to be considered for Technical Trainer Jobs In Kenya are postgraduate diploma in education and probably the best one if you choose to go the postgraduate way..

That means you already had a bachelor’s and now you thought that you can become a trainer

and you choose to do a postgraduate, probably the best one is PGD TVET, that is postgraduate diploma in TVET.

Okay, this one again is offered at the Kenya school of TVET.

So those are the pedagogy qualifications that are considered if you want to become a TVET trainer in Kenya – you will have met all TVETA license requirements.

STEP 3 – How to get TVETA license in Kenya

The final step if you have done your Diploma or Degree qualification and you have your pedagogy, the final is to register with TVETA.

So this is your final step and it is just done online.

You go to tveta.go.ke and you upload the documents (all needed as per the above TVET trainer qualifications in Kenya) then fill in the required details.

The fee is Kshs.1,000.

You get to have your TVETA license and you will now be ready to start applying for those jobs.

So don’t forget to apply for vacancies offered by the boards of governors once you have completed your TVETA trainer registration.

You don’t have to wait for the PSC jobs. These (the Boards) most of the time they have some shortages of staff and they hire part-time tutors, sometimes temporary tutors.

Apply.

You never know.

Again, these public service TVET trainer jobs will find you while you’re working there.

And if you have done good for yourself, they might recommend you to the shortlisting panel during recruitment.

You never know.

So don’t just stay at home.

Start applying for these jobs.

Even private institutions hire trainers.

I’d recommend that you apply as soon as possible if your dream is to become a nurse..of course we keep saying that nursing is one of the most in demand courses out there.
