Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) is a fully registered and accredited TVET institution located in Kiambu town, approximately fourteen kilometers from Nairobi.

As a matter of fact, it provides a diverse range of courses at the diploma, certificate, and artisan levels, as detailed in our previous article (Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology courses offered).

Please keep in mind that regardless of the course you’ll be taking, the fee structure for all courses offered at the institution is the same.

To be more specific, the total fee per academic year is Kshs. 67,189, with the following breakdown:

Term 1

• Activity=kshs.2114
• Caution money =Kshs. 1,000
• Electricity, water, and conservancy=kshs.1,849
• Local Transport &Travelling =kshs.1,849
• Personal Emoluments=kshs.3,699
• Repairs & Maintenance =kshs.1,057
• Tuition=kshs.23,652

Total= Kshs. 35,220

Term 2

• Activity=kshs.2,400
• Electricity, water, and conservancy=kshs.2,100
• Local Transport &Travelling =kshs.2,100
• Personal Emoluments=kshs.4,200
• Repairs & Maintenance =kshs.1,200
• Tuition=kshs.19,969

Total= Kshs. 31,969

TOTAL PER YEAR =KSHS.67,189

Other levies paid on admission

• Registration fee: 1,000
• Student ID: 600
• Development levy: 3,000
• KUCCPS registration fee: 1,500

Other fees payable on termly/per module

• Industrial attachment, Medical & Insurance = Kshs.1,500 (termly)
• Student Body (student Council): 300 (termly)
• Training materials (practices): 1,500 (termly)
• ICT & Internet: 1,000 (payable once per year)

Exam fee

The examination fee is paid separately from the tuition fee,  depending on the course you are taking.

On average, exam fees range between Kshs. 5,000 and Kshs. 10,000, while KNEC practical exams cost between Kshs. 2,500 and Kshs. 5,000.

KIST accommodation/hostels

If you wish to stay in the school’s hostels, please keep in mind that the hostel fee is Kshs. 6,200 per term.

The hostel fee, however, does not include meals, so budget separately for this.

Also, keep in mind that hostels are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and require full payment of tuition and other levies.

But, even after you have paid your tuition, you should inquire about the availability of the hostel rooms before making any hostel payments to the dean of students for availability and booking.

Catering/Meals

Remember that the accommodation fee does not include meals, so you will need to budget for them separately.

Fortunately, there are a variety of meals available in the KIST pay-as-you-eat (PAYE) cafeteria, so you will have a choice from the available meals.

Therefore, it is recommended that you have at least Kshs. 200 per day, which is an estimate for breakfast, lunch, and supper.

How to apply to KIST

You can apply for a course at KIST in one of the following two ways:

1. Apply as a government-sponsored student via theKUCCPS portal (when it is open); remember that if you are placed through KUCCPS, you will be eligible for government scholarships and loans.
2. You can also apply as a self-sponsored student by visiting the KIST registration portal, filling out the necessary information, and submitting your application.

It is important to note that admission to KIST is on a first-come, first-served basis, so submit your application as soon as possible.

Fee structure of Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology – How to pay fees

Please keep in mind that all fees must be paid in full by the reporting date, and that payments should be made via:

1. Banker’s cheque, postal order, or direct deposit to Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology, A/C No. 01100063992300, at Co-operative Bank, Kiambu Branch.

You can also pay via Cooperative Bank Pay Bill, as follows:

• Navigate to the Mpesa menu and select the “Lipa na Mpesa” option.
• Choose “Pay Bill.”
• Enter Business number “4108221”
• Then, enter the account number that is your admission number/student name (for example, ABT2009-06/Mustapha Ali).
• Enter the amount to pay.
• Finally, enter your MPESA PIN and confirm your transaction.

2. Alternatively, you can make your payment via KCB Bank Account No. 1217852204; Account Name: Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology.

Again, you can also pay using the KCB Bank Pay Bill as follows:

• Go to the Mpesa menu, then to “Lipa na Mpesa.”
• Select “Pay Bill”,
• Enter Business number “700076”
• Enter Account Number as your admission number/student name (e.g., ABT-2009- 06/Mustapha Ali)
• Enter amount to pay.
• Lastly, enter your MPESA PIN and then confirm your transaction.
