Aviation courses explained

Here now is a small explanation of these available aviation courses:

· Air traffic control(ATC) course

Take this course if you dream of working as a licensed Air traffic controller.

Air traffic controllers are crucial in flying operations and will carry out duties such as giving instructions/ advice, and other essential information to pilots when flying.

Indeed, pilots would struggle to fly efficiently, safely, & quickly without the help of air traffic controllers(these are the personnel who man the radar at the airport).

· Flight Operations Officers’ Course

Here you train to become a flight dispatcher(AKA airline dispatcher/flight operations officer/flight follower).

The roles of the dispatcher include:

Planning flight paths

Providing flight following services.

Advising pilots when conditions change.

They work from airline’s operations hub.

· Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Training

This course prepares you to become an aircraft repairman and repairwoman (look at an aircraft engineer simply as an aircraft ‘mechanic’).

· Private Pilot License

Private Pilot License(PPL) gives you the basic knowledge plus foundational skills you need to start flying.

At the end of training, a private pilot can fly a small airplane during daytime and at night even with passengers onboard.

· Commercial Pilot License

This training prepares you to fly commercial aircraft safely under all conditions.

You can go for this course after finishing your PPL training.

· Private Pilot License(Helicopters)

This aviation training is pretty similar to PPL training but this time you learn the art of flying a private helicopter.

· Commercial Pilot License(Helicopters)

This is an advancement on the above helicopter piloting course and trains you in the art of flying commercial helicopters.

· Instrument Rating Training

An Instrument Rating course shows you how to fly safely by only referring to instruments(no looking out the window unless when taking off and landing).

You can enroll in this course as a way of adding value to your pilot license.

· Multi-engine Instrument Rating

This course is nearly equivalent to the aforementioned IR training course, except that the focus is on flying multi-engine aircrafts.

Training is thus typically held on properly equipped two engine piston aircraft.

· Airline Transport Pilot License(A.T.P.L) Training

An ATPL is a higher level qualification and it adds tremendous value to other aircraft pilot certificates.

Those with it usually work as air-line transport pilots and will be the pilots-in-command on big aircrafts.

Training is quite rigorous.

· Flight Instructor Rating Training

This prepares for flight instructor role- it is intended for those pilots who have a thing for teaching and would like to become flying teachers/instructors at some point.

How to apply for aviation course

Most aviation colleges in Kenya need you to apply online so you should visit the website of the school you have chosen and follow the outlined steps to submit your application online.

How much is aviation school fees?

Fees for aviation courses in Kenya depend on the selected course and the school.

For example, the total fee to acquire a commercial pilot license(CPL) at the Kenya School of Flying is about Kshs.3000000.

At the same time, flight training centre charges Kshs.2,809,000 for the course.

Meanwhile, PPL training will cost you Kshs. 800,000 at flight training centre while the Kenya school of flying charges about Kshs.1000000 for the private pilot license course.

The best way to confirm the actual fee is to visit the website of the flying school you intend to attend.

Requirements for aviation school/aviation courses in Kenya requirements

In general, you must be at least 16 years old.
In addition, you must have passed your ‘O’ levels with a C+ mean grade (at least).
You are also required to have a C+ grade in Maths, English, Geography, plus any one science subject.
A certificate showing you’re medically fit will also be asked for by most aviation schools.
