How to apply

If you’d like to apply for admission into any degree in public health I have listed above, you can do so through KUCCPS (If you have not done it already).

The good thing is that if you’re placed in your preferred course by KUCCPS, you will benefit from government sponsorship (which means you will pay a reduced fee).

Otherwise, you have to apply as a self-sponsored student directly to the university you have chosen.

All you need to do is go to the University’s website and apply online.

You can also visit the University physically (they could have a campus near you) to make the application.

Diploma In Public Health In Kenya

This is the only public health course in KMTC at the Diploma level and perhaps there is no better place to study for a Diploma in Public Health in Kenya than KMTC.

The course takes 3 years and here are the minimum requirements:

Diploma in public health requirements

Pre- service programme

KCSE Mean Grade: C

Additional requirements: C in English/Kiswahili and Biological Sciences/Biology. You also need a C- in Maths and any one of these subjects: Chemistry, Physics/Physical Sciences

Public Health(Upgrading from a Certificate to Diploma) – 2 year programme

Certificate in Public Health(Environmental Health Sciences)

Certificate in public health in Kenya

I also recommend KMTC if you’d like to take a Certificate course in Public Health- perhaps your grades are not enough to get you into a Diploma programme directly.

It will take you 2 years to complete the course and you must satisfy the following minimum entry requirements:

KCSE Mean Grade: C-

Additional requirements: C- in English/Kiswahili, D+ in Biological Sciences/Biology. You also need a D in Maths plus any one of these subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Home Science, Agriculture, Technical Drawing, Building Construction, Electricity, or Wood Work

Download KMTC’s public health department brochure here

Public health courses in Kenya –Other institutions you can consider

There are a number of other institutions offering Public health courses in Kenya including:

Chuka University

You can enroll in a Diploma in Public Health at Chuka University.

You will, however, need to have the following qualifications:

KCSE Mean Grade: C-

Additional requirements: C in English/Kiswahili, Biology, Chemistry, and Math/Physics.

Other acceptable qualifications: Certificate in Public Health/Environmental Health from any recognized training institution. You must also be registered by the PHOTC(Public Health Officers and Technicians Council)

Here is a link to the course

Which Universities offer Masters in Publich Health in Kenya?

Now, if you’d like to advance further, you can pursue a Master of Science(MSc.) Programme in Public Health at the following universities:

JKUAT

Below are the entry requirements:

A University degree (with Upper Second-Class Honours) in a relevant area from any University recognised by JKUAT’s Senate.

Bear in mind that those with a Lower Second-Class Honours may be admitted too if they can provide genuine evidence of past research /relevant academic work to JKUAT’s Senate.

Aga Khan University

The other good University when it comes to health sciences including Public Health is Aga Khan University and you can go for your Masters degree (Master of Science-Msc.- in Public Health) there.

Learn more here

Moi University

Moi University also offers Master of Public Health degree course.

Find out more here.

Maseno University

Masters of Public Health programme is offered at Maseno University too and you might want to study with them.

If so, apply through this link.

Is public health marketable in Kenya?

Well, the course is not very marketable in Kenya because most public health jobs in Kenya are by the county governments and the Ministry of Health.

The truth is, only a few other institutions hire graduates of public health (examples include international development agencies and not-for-profit institutions such as AMREF).

Academic institutions also hire occasionally – and for the most part you might be hired as a lecturer or a researcher.

So yeah, there are not many public health jobs in Kenya so you need to have that in mind as you evaluate your options.
