Whether you are a member of the deaf community seeking specialized training or a hearing individual passionate about integrated learning, Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf (KTTID) is a place where potential meets opportunity. Established in 1990, this Special Needs Public TVET Institution has been a beacon of hope, transforming lives through practical skills and vocational training. Let’s explore what makes KTTID a unique and incredible place to study.

A Prime Location in Nairobi

KTTID is situated in one of Nairobi’s most serene and prestigious neighborhoods. You will find the campus in Karen, along Karen Road, just off Lang’ata Road and Ngong Road. It is notably located right next to the Deputy President’s New Office and Residence. This location not only provides a secure and peaceful environment conducive to learning but also places students in a well-connected part of the city.

How to Reach Out: Contacts

Postal Address: P.O. Box 24785 – 00502 Nairobi, Kenya

Diverse Courses for Every Passion

KTTID is not just about basic education; it is about equipping you for the modern workforce. The institute offers a wide array of courses examined by recognized bodies such as KNEC, TVET CDACC, NITA, and KASNEB.

Here is a breakdown of the program levels and some of the exciting fields you can venture into:

Level

Typical Duration

Popular Courses Offered

Diploma

3 Years

ICT, Computer Science, Automotive Engineering, Building Technology, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Fashion Design.

Craft Certificate

2 Years

Agri-Business, Welding & Fabrication, Food & Beverage, Carpentry & Joinery, Electrical Installation, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy.

Artisan

1 – 2.5 Years

Barbering, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy, Masonry, Plumbing.

Short Courses

3 Months

Hydroponic Farming, ArchiCAD/AutoCAD, Tie & Die, Kenyan Sign Language (KSL).

A standout feature of KTTID is its comprehensive Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) program, offering classes from elementary to advanced levels. This is a fantastic opportunity for hearing students to bridge the communication gap and become valuable assets in inclusive workplaces.

Understanding the Fees

Financing your education is a crucial consideration. As a public TVET institution, KTTID’s fee structure is aligned with government standards. The tuition fee for Diploma and Certificate courses is approximately Ksh 67,189 per academic year.

The great news is that students placed through KUCCPS are eligible for government capitation and can apply for Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans, which significantly reduces the out-of-pocket costs for families. For short holiday courses, fees can be as affordable as Ksh 2,500.

Admission Requirements

KTTID has structured its admission requirements to ensure that everyone has a starting point, regardless of their previous academic performance:

Diploma Courses: Require a KCSE Mean Grade of C- (minus) or a relevant Craft Certificate.

Craft Certificate Courses: Require a KCSE Mean Grade of D (plain) or a relevant Artisan Certificate.

Artisan Courses: Accessible with a KCSE Mean Grade of E or a KCPE Certificate.

Short Courses: These are open-access, meaning no prior academic qualifications are required.

The Application Process

Applying to KTTID is a straightforward process. You have two main pathways:

Government Placement (KUCCPS): You can apply through the KUCCPS student portal when it opens. This is the recommended route if you want to secure government sponsorship.

Manual Application: You can apply directly to the institute. This involves writing a handwritten application letter stating your desired course, attaching photocopies of your academic certificates, ID, and birth certificate, and including a non-refundable application fee of Ksh 300 via money order.

Note: While persons with hearing impairment are given first priority, hearing individuals are highly encouraged to apply!

Student Life: An Inclusive Community

Student life at KTTID is defined by its unique, integrated community. The campus is a melting pot where deaf and hearing students interact, learn, and grow together.

The Dean of Students office plays a pivotal role in campus life, providing personal and social assistance to ensure that the needs of all trainees are met. The environment is designed to be supportive, with modern facilities tailored to accommodate special needs education. Learning sign language becomes more than just a course; it becomes the daily medium of connection, fostering deep friendships and a profound understanding of deaf culture.

Why Choose KTTID?

If you are still wondering if KTTID is the right fit for you, consider these compelling reasons:

A True Centre of Excellence: KTTID has decades of specialized experience in delivering technical and vocational training tailored for the hearing impaired.

Bridging the Gap: It is one of the few institutions that actively promotes an integrated learning environment, preparing both deaf and hearing students for an inclusive society.

Market-Driven Skills: The curriculum is heavily focused on practical, hands-on training that directly translates to employability and entrepreneurship.

Strategic and Serene Location: Studying in Karen offers a peaceful setting highly conducive to academic success.
